Get rid of the stupid bar...

Yeah, do we really need the "Burt Reynolds Bar" and the 70's stigma to go with it? Corvette got rid of it years ago, and I don't here their owners complaining....

They'd have to be optional. And the car would have to have been designed to incorporate them like the 4th gens did.

Of course, if they were there, than I'd get them. In 2002 they were around $1000, right? And at least half of the cars sold had them.

You know, you are the only person I've ever heard refer to the T-bar as the "Burt Reynolds Bar". Seriously, everyone here says it is so very important for the next Camaro to cater to Camaro enthusiasts, and as one I love the uniqueness and tradition of T-topped Camaros. Don't like 'em, don't order 'em. I have never heard anyone say negative things about them, in fact the looks you get with them off were more of awe than anything else. Bottom line is that a T-top option is not going to ruin the chances of sales to the mass public if the car is a winner, but not having them is going to disappoint a lot of Camaro enthusiasts. I think this poll reflects that.

The poll doesn't list targa as an option. Why do you want the bar? You haven't heard anyone say negative things about them? You must have missed all the "my T-top blew off" posts in the lounge... not to mention the leaks.

The open air experience is an important part of a sports car and some type of removable roof panels should be an option, but I think Targa is the better option. Reference the C5.

I know that they're popular...but I've never been too enamored with T-Tops. They were fine for my friends' cars...but something I'd have no interest in ordering.

Maybe I'm just a minimalist. But, I just like coupes. The extra weight and lack of rigidity (although not so in the 4th gen), have never been worth it for me. Add leaks, rattles and "ejection" hatches at highway speeds, and I think that I wouldn't take 'em for free.

I didn't list "targa" because full-width designs are cumbersome to handle, and bulky to stow away. Look at the hatch area of a C5 coupe when the targa is removed, and you'll see what I'm talking about. In any case, the center bar in a T-tops setup makes for a stiffer, lighter structure. A targa lacks this structural tie-in between the windshield frame and the roof. Having driven both the C5 coupe and hardtop on a track, I didn't much like the loss of rigidity from the targa.

As far as "t-tops" blowing off, that's just operator negligence. I make sure my tops are secure when I put them back on then I lock them. The F4 has locks for the Ts, so why not use them? I also don't have any leaks either, but there again, I make sure that the gaskets are clean and maintained.

I had time to ponder the targa vs. t-top question on the day I picked up my Z28. A C5 coupe had come in on the same car carrier, with the optional glass targa stowed away under the hatch. It took up nearly all of the cargo area. It took me all of 90 seconds to get the tops off my Z28 and - surprise, surprise - I still had plenty of space left over.

Exactly. Anyone who has ever had a T "blow off" while driving obviously did not have them latched down properly. As others have mentioned, a targa top is a more cumbersome setup, offers less body/chassis ridgidity, takes up more stowage space, and probably would be more expensive to engineer into a design to boot. Why? I don't mind the bar, a lot of other people apparently don't either.

T-Tops were ordered on some 80+% of 4th Gen Camaros when they were available... and they werea THOUSAND DOLLAR OPTION!

I think that ends the arguement right there.

Question

Would seem to me that a Corvette can have a Targa top mostly due to it's full frame.......and the lack there-of on our cars.......think crash collapse.....i.e. folding in the middle in a head-on.

I believe convertibles are additionally, structurally enhanced and/or exempted.

I've owned a car w/ a targa before (Fiat X19....don't ask ) and that top is a PITA to remove and store by yourself...if your a woman or short....that and it takes up real estate in a big way.

I'd be interested in seeing what percentage of those were ordered by dealers replenishing their inventory. When shopping for my 4th gen every Z I found in dealer stock had all the option boxes checked. Most were automatics too. I ordered my own. No power equipment, no t tops and make it a 6 speed with the Z rated tires.

But, isn't that the greathing about them being an option? If you don't want them, you can get get a Camaro without them.

Absolutely. If you read my first post in this thread, you'll see that I have no problem with T tops on somebody else's car. I just feel that it's time for something different.
