Should Ford just kill off Mercury, and replace it with Volvos in the showroom?

Mercury wont die.The Messenger is going to be coming (not sure if it will look anything like that but...) it will be here in 2006 it most likely will be called the Cougar.
And for you to say Merc is just rebadged Fords is like me saying that 1/2 of GM's cars are the same thing. It is ludacris.
Mercury will have plenty new products out soon enough.
I can see guionM starting a new thread in the near future."DID YOU SEE THE NEW MERC'S!"
I wouldnt believe what M/T says about the Marauder just yet

The Montego seems like it has possibilities (guess we have to wait till New York), and because J. Mays said recently the Messenger needed more work before it's produced at least says Ford is working to bring it to production. I just got negative on Mercury after reading that most all it's new products are going to be a minivan, at least 2 SUV/Crossover vehicles, and a F500 with a different grille. This is at the same time that Lincoln basically announced they were giving up on aspiring to make world class cars.
It just seems like no good news to come out of LM. Even the Mark X seems to be no closer to production, while Cadillac's ETC seems to be moving forward.
Ford is cutting costs every where it can.Which means it reflects the other brands as well.It isnt like Ford isnt making money,Its just that they arent over shadowing the previous years sales.
Even if they were to kill off the Marauder it isnt that big of a deal. The spark will come when they bring their S197 based Cougar.
As for Lincoln not going "world class" It wont hurt Lincoln. They mainly are shooting for US sales anyway.
You forgot to mention the new Sable replacement. It will be based off of a Volvo platform.
The Minivan comments arent a shock. The Ford/Merc minivans arent that big of a change.Just like the "new" pontiac gran prix is still on a older platform.
Id say at the end of the decade (which things dont get corrected overnite as you know all too well) Merc will be looking better Im sure of it.

guionM ... I think you're on to something ....
I can't say that I have a dislike for Volvo like others have expressed. In fact, I have had the opportunity to walk through a Volvo factory in the mid 90's ... and was really impressed with the state of their operation. (this location was JD powers award recepient ... Didn't stop Volvo from closing it down).
I think they build a great car .. if you can afford the price and like their styling. Sure, it wouldn't be in the top ten cars of people who frequent this board, but I have owed one and found it to be a very nice "family car". This would really be an add-on to their current selection. I never go to a ford dealer ... but if they sold Volvo's I may drop by.
Product mix would definately be enhanced by this idea .... Just don't drop Saab's in my dealers showroom ....
