Sedan and wagon models to join coupe as Ford builds on pony car’s strong brand

Ford’s iconic Mustang is poised to play a crucial role in Ford’s future by expanding beyond its traditional role as a single performance figurehead into a complete range of global models. And the company’s Australian arm looks like the source for all the necessary hardware.
In a secret product planning meeting last fall, key Ford executives discussed a bold strategy to take the legendary Mustang mainstream. Ideas include both sedan and wagon variants of America’s original muscle car, with those cars joining the traditional coupe when the sixth-generation Mustang arrives in U.S. showrooms in 2011, AutoWeek sources say.

I hope to God they aren't that short-sighted. Talk about diluting a successful brand name...
Mustang = sporty two door.
I'm sure this is just some idea that was tossed out during a brainstorming session (you know, one of those deals were there are "no bad ideas, so write everything down that comes to mind").
No way this will actually happen.

If it's on AW, you have to assume it's the real deal.
It's one thing to have "mustang" styling cues on another model, but it sure sounds like they're talking about slapping the Mustang name on a wagon and sedan as well.
I'd still be laughing if I wasn't crying for my pony car brothers. At least the Mustang 2 folks won't be as ridiculed after 2011.
Actually one of my Camaro books has photos of a clay done in 1966 showing a proposed 1968 Camaro Wagon. One side of the clay even had a vinyl top.
And you know something? It actually looked kind of cool.
Think about it though. If Ford were to offer a 4-door sedan version of the Mustang, and a 5-door wagon, it would give buyers an alternative to BMW's 3-series. (Not that the quality, or performance of Ford would match BMW's.)
It's an interesting proposal to say the least. I just don't see it happening for Camaro though. What with a new Malibu and Impala, they already have plenty of options other than bastardizing the Camaro name.

When Honda buys what's left of Ford in a few years the two biggest brands Ford has left is the Stang and the F-series so I guess anything is possible.
Honda has neither a significant truck line nor an affordable RWD line up as well.
