Last time we were in the UK, we rented an Astra. Very nice car all around, got about 36MPG in mixed driving over 1800 miles.

If they keep the Euro interior and keep the price down, this is a winner. Especially if they bring the retractable convertible and 2-door coupe versions over.

I think you're right. Rumors persist of a Cobalt update/revamp... anyone know more about that?
Cobalt is supposed to get a facelift later this year as a 2008 model.

After that, my guess is it moves to the Astra's structure:

Stop me if I'm wrong, I thought the Opel Vectra and it's Vauxhall sibling were fundamentally the same as the Cobalt...

windows look awfully similar at the very least

Vectra is built off a variation of Epsilon, which is what the 9-3, Malibu, G6 and its twin sister Aura are built off of.
The Astra's chassis is not the same as the Delta here in the US, aka Cobalt/G5 but it shares some of the traits with it. Some have said that its a new platform that is more advanced then Delta, soem said its just a rehash of the last gen Astra's chassis, some have said that the Delta is really a warmed over LG AStra chassis.

What's the small screen in the upper center of dash?
Looks like an old monochrome CRT.
Shouldn't there be a full color LCD there?

That design of car always bugged me. Looks liek a Volkswagon in profile.

In the UK, that depends on the model. High Spec units have full colour sat nav sreens there. Low spec ones have the monochrome MFD there instead.

Well it's nice to know that I'm not completely out of the loop.

We always seem to agree.

This looks lightyears ahead of the Ion in terms of quality, driving dynamics, etc....but I'm just not a fan of the Caliber hatchback wagon look. I'd rather have a more traditional-looking compact like the Cobalt, even if it isn't as good in other respects.

That monochrome screen is gonna get torn up here in the States. They better make a larger, color LCD the only option. The critics will be all over that; bashing it.
It looks like something from the early '80s. Like a monitor from one of those "portable" computers.
