You are wrong about the 300 not being retro. Look at the 300's from the past. The gril ont he 300 is just turned upside down. The car is clearly a nod to the past in every way. Its the same as the PT cruiser. While its not an exactl copy of any particular car, it takes cues from MANY past vehicles and combines them.
If you read what I wrote you will see that I said that the 300 uses cues from the past that are more abstract and are not solely from one vehicle. The large grill is the only real design cue from previous 300's. Most of the "retro" parts of the car are very general such as the proportions: large, wide, long hood, non-cabfoward, emphasis on rear wheel drive, things of this nature. What you don't see is same grill, headlight, hood, fog lights, wheels, fenders, profile, tail lights, bumper designs, entire interior, ect. that you have in a new Mustang.
Try this, take a picture of an old 300 and a new one and place them side by side and do the same with a Mustang and tell me which one is retro. The similarities for the 300 are very abstract while the Mustang similarities are very literal.

On the flip side, and this is subjective, I think the current car is probably one of the best looking mustangs to come down the pipe in 30 years or so (although I must admit I also have a soft spot for the fox-X cars and even can find something good to say about the pintostang as well as the beached whales they produced from 71 to 73).
In short I think 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 999999999999999999999999999999% of the time, aerodynamics are highly overrated and qualify right up there with the number of cams and valves an engine has in the hierarchy of benchracing discussions that often go on. I say unless the car is designed as a racing piece from the get go, style should take precedence over aerodynamics.

For all the wailing and gnashing of teeth over the whole retro thing, lets put this into perspective. If GM puts together a well performing car at a reasonable price, the majority of the enthuiasts will be satisfied, as long as the looks are not on the wrong side of an Aztek.
A V8 RWD affordable coupe is what we want, as long as that basic formula is not broken, and the folks in the aforementioned Aztek's styling studio have had their drawing priviledges permanently revoked, I'll give the designers alot of leeway.

I'm not a big fan of retro, I'm sure I could deal with it as long as it looks good. This is the quote that gives me faith that I'll like it....
I have faith that Scott has good taste and did his best to bring us the best Camaro we could get. If it is enough to bring a big grin on his face I believe most of us will be happy.

Revolution, evolution. But when it comes right down to it, nicely styled cars are never out of style.
The next Camaro will do well. It will sell well. It will go fast. Much better than what we have now, which is nothing.
