Re: Retro vs. Revolutionary: The 5th Gen’s Styling

I can't say enough how bad I DON"T want a retro design!

I have made many posts about this but I will just say quickly that how can anyone at GM justify this design direction after Ford just did this with the Mustang. This just displays an attitude of being contempt to follow and to not exceed the competition. That is something you might expect from the "old GM". They have the talent and the ability to make a car better than the Mustang so why don't they break-away and take the Camaro in a modern direction to look to the future and not dwell on the past.

This is starting to get too long.

RETRO IS A DEAD END!

I want a revolutionary design in a first gen configuration . Meaning a real trunk , 1/4 windows behind the door , slightly more upright seating . I dont see why GM could not incorporate that trunk lid to open like a hatch though . Holden had a similar opening trunk on one of their concept cars . Let the trunk open like a hatch , and let the back seats fold flat . Something like that would be useful as hell , but nearly invisible because the car would not LOOK like a hatchback . The car MUST have T-tops , but got the love of god ...when the T's are on , design the side rails of T's in a manner that makes them completely invisible . Not a hard thing to do IMO .

Since we are copying and pasting things from other threads:

Alright then, I am whining for a 69 inspired car! Not a copy, not a replica but new car that is an evoloution of the 1st gens. As if the 2nd,3rd and 4th gen we know never existed. Thats what would make me wait to buy ANYTHING until this car came out.

Re: Retro vs. Revolutionary: The 5th Gen’s Styling

Like I've said before, I'd like to see the Camaro continue evolving just like the Corvette has. Styling cues from the past, modern design.

I don't agree with the design posted above though, looks like the front of a GTO and the rear of a Beretta. Hopefully the next Camaro will only remind us of a Camaro.

To me its more of a good start design theme of evolution rather than a straight up concept I want build. I think it shows Camaro can have a brand new design and still say Camaro.

For example, the 3rd gens and 2nd gens share styling cues that make them both Camaro’s but over all have a brand new look.

While I think the 3rd to 4th gen was less subtle, you can clearly see the evolution and fresh styling.

With about a 6 year gap in production I think this gives the designs even more freedom to come up with a more cutting edge Camaro.

GM don’t cop out and just modernize the 1st Gen.

I love 1st Gens but if I want one I’ll go to the classifieds.

Build a 5th gen that people in 2048 will cream over like people today cream over the 1st gens!

Yeah I’m passionate about this, and this will be a deal killer for me if it goes retro.

Red/Fbodfather any input or opinion?

No retro. I agree about having a trunk and t-tops that blend in.

I really hope it is revolutionary, I like the '69 Camaro, but I don't want to own a "Modern Interpretation". I guess we will see in January (I hope), but I sure hope it will be a new direction we are looking at.

Re: Retro vs. Revolutionary: The 5th Gen’s Styling

I've said it many times and I'll say it again...IF I WANT A '69 CAMARO I'LL JUST BUY THE ORIGINAL THING!!!

Sure, I'm hopeful to be able to buy another Camaro when it comes back (heck, I'd LOVE nothing more than to go pick up a brand-new one at my local Chevy dealership; Talk about a special feeling when I did that with both my '00 & '02 Z28's). But if this next generation Camaro is going to be based off of a first generation design, well then...How boring!

I know a lot of guys will disagree with this, but a retro copycat is tasteless IMO...GM would indeed be the follower instead of the leader...I want a fresh new design (some small styling cues from the past are great; but a design based mostly off of something that has already been used over THIRTY-FIVE years ago is like admitting they can't come up with anything new anymore). And I find that really hard to believe considering that GM has some of the best (if not the best) engineers/designers in the world.

Lastly, this is just a thread discussing the "possibilities" of what design the next Camaro will be based off of...Not that we already "know" what it is and that were already unhappy about it, LOL. Just a little clarification so some of you don't come in here with the "you don't even know what the 5th gen is really going to look like crap." Well duh...

I too HOPE GM is reading this,

Mike

Talking Re: Retro vs. Revolutionary: The 5th Gen’s Styling

I had favored evolutionary with heritage cues in the past, but really if it looks good, it looks good. As RP has said, those who don't like it at first will change their minds in <6 months typically. I'll agree that I was that way about the Mustang.

So basically, do whatever works. Just DON'T MESS IT UP!

Edit:
The problem with evolutionary is that you'll be basing a 5th gen off an arguably unpopular 4th generation style just for the sake of doing so. If it's revolutionary as an alternative to retro (which this thread suggests), then you can't all of the sudden base it off of a Ferrari. That's what the attached pictures borrow from IMO and what others have drawn from (KrisH, etc.). That's just not a Camaro. It's okay to re-invent styling once in a while, and many times warranted, but I don't know that you can do that with a car with such an established history of what it is and what it is not.

From all indications, the styling direction has already been established, so this debate is moot. You cannot blame GM for the styling direction they have decided upon, and frankly it is probably what the public expects out of a Camaro following the Mustang's success. I think it's what they'd be excited to see as a response.

Regardless of styling, at least there isn't a question of whether the car will maintain the proper configuration and door count.
