REPORT: Next BMW M5 to feature twin-turbo V10 with 600 hp

The next BMW M5 is due to arrive sometime in 2011 or 2012 and as the release date draws near, more details about BMW's newest 'Bahn-burner have begun to surface.

Two reports indicate that BMW may continue to use a V10 powerplant in the next M5, although there's still some evidence that the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 currently fitted to the X5M and X6M could be tweaked and fitted in its place. However, if BMW decides to stick with the bent-ten, a thoroughly revised version based off the 'utes' V8 would be employed, packing a duo of turbos to boost output up and over the 600 hp mark, and giving the Audi RS6 a run for its money.

But it won't be all about power. BMW is also expected to use an F1-style KERS system to increase performance and fuel economy, along with an engine start-stop setup and an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox. If the rumors are to be believed, expect the next M5 to make its debut sometime in 2011, with sales beginning in early 2012.

I thought they were going with smaller FI engine across the board with the m5 going TT v8 and the M3 going with a TT I6. I'd be a little surprised if they go with the TT v10.

Looks like they'll have to go with the LS9 in the CTS-V. Seems like the only logical thing to do.

That is just what I was thinking. Maybe they can just use the supercharger from the LS9 on the LSA. Isn't it a good amount bigger.

M5 is also 80+k and will probably go up in price if it does get to 600+hp. The 415hp m3 is the CTS-v's more natural competitor price wise. I don't think GM has anything to worry about here.

Can't they just turn up the boost on the LSA to get to 600?? Has anyone tested the limits of this engine??

The LSA is pretty much maxed out, with it's cast hypereurectic pistons and steel rods limiting much more power.
If you want to turn up the wick, you'll need the LS9's forged pistons and titanium rods.

Titanium rods are not good with FI. Titanium rods are generally used with high hp NA motors.

The LSA/9 is todays technology, not tomorrows. I am looking forward to see what GM has up their sleeves.

True. But compare the CTS and M5 physically and they're almost identical dimensionally with the CTS outweighing the M5 by 200lbs.

Depending on the cost to upgrade the CTS, it would be nice for the CTS to continue to out-do the M3 and M5 in performance. Let the CTS follow the 5 series pricewise and give us a smaller Caddy to go against the 3. Is that alpha Cadillac still happening?

The CTS-V and M3 are both fantastic cars but as you imply, have different personalities.

The Cadillac Alpha(s) are in the works. Let's hope Cadillac is still making "V's" by then.

I went yesterday to the local Caddy dealership and checked out a CTS-V. I was doubting the quality before i arrived, but the CTS-V beats the M5 in all areas. Performance, looks, and most importantly quality.

The CTS-V leveled the competition. BWM is pissed off right now. Thank you LSA.

I cant wait to an Alpha Caddy.
