Rented a Bonneville. I now REALLY dislike Bonnevilles!
Re: Rented a Bonneville. I now REALLY dislike Bonnevilles!
You lost me when you said that a maxima was dangerous above 80 and couldn't handle worth a du-du. Thats why it has the same roadholding ability as a Z28. ??? As a maxima and F-body owner I dont follow you.
I'd blame tires and maybe air pressure for your bonnie ride. Also a green 3.8 that may have not had an oil or air filter change yet. Tranny shifting-I agree that that sucks.

I have a 2000 Bonneville SE (first model year of the last body style). I like it. It has 120,000 miles on it and runs as well as it did new. Maintenance-wise, it needed new front wheel bearings around 105K and has been in for one recall (fuel pressure regulator had an issue in extreme cold weather climates) -- that's it. It's quiet, handles well for a big sedan, and has tons of room and tons of amenities.
It does not hunt for gears, it has decent power (far from overwhelming, but enough to smoke most ricers), it's comfortable, and I have no complaints about the interior (sure, it's not up to MY2007 refinement standards, but what MY2000 car is?).
Pushed to the handling limits, it understeers like a bitch and shudders, but that is not what this car was built for. Below the limit, body roll is noticeable but grip, control, and response is good. The brakes could stand to be stronger and a little more fade-resistant, IMO. This may not be an issue on SSEi or GXP models.
The SSEi models are supercharged, with ~40 extra horsepower depending on the model year.
Guy, the fact is that you drove a car that's the last model year of its generation and due to be redesigned. I'm pretty sure I heard that the Bonneville has been dropped anyway -- they don't make them anymore, and if they refill that market segment with another Pontiac, it probably won't be called Bonneville. So I'm not sure what relevance there is in your review.
