I wonder how much more the engine is capable of handling, STOCK?
According to my calculations (which are approximate because I had to guess at the tire size and redline), first gear will be good to about 30mph in the automatic version and about 50mph with the manual trans.
Regarding it being useless at WOT... did you not read about Performance Traction Management?
1st is good for 35
2nd 59 (boo, 2 gear changes for 0-60)
3rd 91
4th 121 (should trap really close to the top of 4th gear)
5th 164
6th 208
and with the manual:
1st 52
2nd 78
3rd 107
4th 139
5th 174
6th 221
So the engine lineup is 260hp, 304hp and 550hp? Seems like a place in the middle needs to be filled.
I have been thinking for awhile that GM needs a HO 5.3L. Something in the 360-375 range with DI and DOD. For use in Camaro, G8, CTS, H3A, and C6. I think the vette could knock down 30 mpg in a base model with a engine like this. I dont know that the engine size and DOD would work well with the heavier vehicles unless some favorful gears are used. Which could make for better acceleration numbers.
The caddy is sweet. I bet the piston choice came to NVH. Nobody pays big cash for a car with piston slap. Overall when you think about it, its a bigger motor that the than the 5.7 that most of us run, with excellent heads, and an intercooler and an effficient 4 lobe blower. With heads that good and a cooled charge and lots of cubes cylinder pressures are going not going to be that bad. Add in piston squirters and not all cast pistons are the same, I bet the metal composition is a little better that the cast piston that are running in everthing else.
