Ready to buy a Chinese Lobster?
The biggest challenge they will have is making one that will pass our safety tests and crash worthiness. They don't understand the physics behind crashes and controlled consumption of energy through material deformation. They do well to simply copy the sheetmetal.
They see opportunity to cut cost and save material by using thinner steels and less of it - so they do it, not knowing they are sacrificing structural integrity in the process.
They are culturally driven by 2 factors that we are 180 apart from with respect to them...
1) Materials are hard to come by so they reuse, recycle, and waste virtually nothing (personal and professionally). They are VERY concerned about waste there, so they look actively to maximise the use of everything. (I saw them assign people to walk through our plant build project and pick up nuts, bolts, washers, fittins, tie wraps - anything of value - and clean them and put them in the maintenance shop bins for use - NO CHIT!) Here, we throw away enough stuff for them to live off of comfortably. We are wasteful whether we admit it or not.
2) Over there, life is nearly worthless, so a crash that kills is no more than "a shame". They wrote a check to the widow of a steel worker that died on our last job... she got about $4300 USD and an apology... and there was another worker on the job the next morning - never slowed down and nothing changed. About 7000 Chinese die in minimg accidents every year. Untold scores of them are run over as pedestrians every day. More are killed in bicycle and moped accidents as well, yet nothing ever changes. Life is cheap there - unlike here - so they don't understand the concepts of "safety" as we do. Here, we have a lawsuit and drive companies out of business if there is an accident that hurts or kills a single person, much less several folks having a class-action suit.
Those differences make the playground a little different for the Chinese, and they simply don't understand our playground rules just like many here don't understand their rules (until you go there for a while and see it 1st hand). Funny how cultures can be driven by resources, huh?
Also, the government allows this black market to exist right in front of them.
wow!
