Man, the last part of that interview sounds really cocky.

It pisses me off that the Chinese so blatantly copy so many cars from the rest of the world. They seem to have absolutely no respect for intellectual property and copy protection laws, even if they don't apply in their country, it's like living in a country where murder is legal... doesn't make it morally right.

Granted their quality control is laughable. But that may change over time.

Eventually, at least one Chinese automaker would like to take over manufacturing cars for the USA, and let Americans specialize in high-technology manufacturing.

"Americans should go to a new industry of space technology," says Geely's Li Shufu. "The automotive industry is a traditional manufacturing industry. … America should do the easier job and keep the hard job for us."
OUCH. And there you have it

Let's stop the US from subsidizing your manufacturing, and see just how well you do those "hard jobs"

So one of them was finally quoted by an American Journalist.

Where the flock have I been for the last 3 years?!?!
I thought I've been trying to convey this to folks on this board for a while now. We (the USA) are in BAD shape boys and girls... I'm telling you.

"It pisses me off that the Chinese so blatantly copy so many cars from the rest of the world. Couldn't agree more. I've felt that way since my first business trip there years ago. Knock-off Rolexes are thrown in your face at every street corner - right in front of cops... arrest them or stop them?!?! Hell no - the cops are BUYING them too! Autocad software for sale on street corners for $1.50 USD/copy. Izod and Polo shirt copies in every doorway for $3USD/ea. Callaway and TaylorMade copies being sold in a golf shop with the name "Mike Golf" and a big swoosh stripe on the sign. (I actually took a picture of that one - have it at home)
You name it - I saw it.

The thing is... their citizens are so shielded from the outside world that they often don't know there is an "original" that is sold in the US or Europe, and that the product they are seeing in their market is actually a "copy". Their people honestly think that design is a Chinese original and they are proud of it, supporting it in every way. To that end, you have to blame their government, not the people, because the government screens everything their people see - written or seen from text to internet. Also, the government allows this black market to exist right in front of them.

This is exactly the kind of behavior that I keep asking everyone to get proactive about, and vocalize to our own government. SHAME ON US if we simply sit and take no action when we see this crap happening. OUR government needs to be taking issue with the Chinese government over this activity, and stop allowing the free-flow of our jobs and technology into their market until they decide to play by the rules as we do (and Great Britain, Australia, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria, and all the other industrialized nations that trade freely with each other.

PS - funny that Benz is actually looking to make a compact car there in China now, isn't it?!?! Guess they already were but just didn't know it!

I think the biggest challenge they will have is making a car to US tastes/standards. The Chinese are good for mfg a product that a US retailer tells them to market. But, if they recruit US marketing/engineering folks, they could take a big chunk of market share.

They don't deserve any piece of Buick or GM IMO...
If Corp's keep going to bed with them b/c they have money blinders on, they get what they deserve!

(That car probably even has LEADED paint!)
