A proper ponycar? From Hyundai?
FWIW, that's a really, really nice looking car. I wish Pontiac made something that looked that great...
Would I buy one? Hell no, as the whole "Korean car" thing doesn't work for me...but I know a lot of people that probably would. As I took the Z28 out last night for its initial cruise of the year, I was lamenting the fact that more and more young people aren't bothering with domestic iron anymore. Mustangs, Camaros and Firebirds are drying up on the streets, being replaced more and more with Civics, Tiburons, tCs and GTIs...around here, SRT-4s and Cobalt SSs are rarities...
I realize this is a surprise to no one...its just sad to see it continue to decline. Hyundai has a great theory there...too bad they'll do it, while Pontiac sits by and watches G6s pile up on rental lots...

Jason...how you be? Haven't heard from you in awhile.
Hanging in there...not to hijack the thread, but its been insane around here lately. I've taken over the F&I position here at the dealership along with my normal GSM duties for the last 6 months, which causes many late nights and pulling my hair out...but the extra $$$ can't be beat
I got engaged back on Valentine's Day, and my fiance just moved in a few weeks ago, so there's never been a lack of things going on around the house. Add to this I've been scouring eBay for NOS parts for the resurrection of the RS (NOS Lexan t-tops, anyone? I got 'em
), and it hasn't left a lot of time for thoughtful posts on here...but I still scan the board every day during lunch.
The RS is in the body shop now, and will be complete by mid summer, which was supposed to be on target for the Camaro gathering in MI in August, however my fiance started a new job and has no vacation time, so I doubt I'll be going
Plus, when I leave this place for any more than a few days, fires start everywhere and the salesmen start swinging from the chandeliers...you know how salespeople can be
I'm still longing for the new car, and have been disheartened at the snail's pace of development. Every Wednesday I'm at the auction in East Windsor, CT with my nose in the GM rows, checking out C5s. If we had more than one garage bay (my Z28 is stored with a friend, while the RS is at home) at home, without a doubt we'd already have an AT (I know, grrr...she won't drive a stick!!) C5 or 35th SS...leaning towards a 35th at this point. I'm having a great deal of difficulty holding out for the new car...I've had the Z28 for 6 years and while I'll never sell it, the RS (which will remain my summer fun driver of about 5-6k miles a year, and won't be sold either) restoration hasn't quenched my appetite for something different. Add to this the fact that Kristen still thinks the 5th gen is too retro (I keep telling her to wait and see it in person!!), and the fact that the lack of t-tops is MAJORLY p!ssing me off on a continued basis (if I'm in one of my cars, they're off), and I wonder what chances I have of actually buying a 5th gen. We both want a 35th SS, and I'm still looming around eBay looking for the right IROC. That'll make 4 Camaros, all of which the tops come off...
If the 5th gen can do that (a power sunroof is NOT enough), I can probably forego the IROC purchase...but if it doesn't? Something tells me I'll be as satisfied spending half the $$ on a mint original IROC I've lusted after since I was 5. Call me crazy, but that's how important the open air experience is to me. Sorry to hijack the thread, but seeing as how Charlie asked...
Speaking of which, Charlie, I've been frequenting your new venture as well, but am not a formal member yet...I'll change that soon, I promise!

If Hyundai decides to offer an optional manual transmission, I would actually be interested. Not a huge fan of the styling, but it is just a rendering, so I'll wait and see. Even if I end up not liking it, more competition in the pony car market is a good thing!
The thought of someone finally designing a modern styled pony car gets my attention ... too bad it had to be an import brand. Call me a snob, but I honestly couldn't see having a Hyundai in my garage. Although the styling isn't that great anyhow, with its exaggerated wheel arches and enlarged Subaru grille. It looks too much like a FWD ricer.
And I would agree with Skorpion that they shouldn't name it Tiburon but for the opposite reason: it would put off anyone who's not a ricer, since the immediate association would be with the sorority-special car they've been making for the last decade.

Image is nothing as one commercial once said...if Hyundai wants to make a new name for itself, so be it.
Thinking outside of that box never hurt.
Not bad looking. Itll be interesting to see how this car turns out if Hyundai decides to build it. Otherwise, competition is a good thing. It'll keep the Mustang and Camaro teams on their toes, and give them inspiration to beat it.
Must be your area Jason because here in central Florida domestics are still pretty popular. When I lived in southern Pa, it was dominated by small import coupes so I was happy to see the change down south.
Pony cars are everywhere here, mostly 4th gens and SN95 Mustangs and 05+ Mustangs. Actually, a SH!Tload of Mustangs and if I counted the rentals I'd say the Mustang is the most common car in central Fl. The V6 Pony package is very popular as is the racing stripe deal, I see about 5-10 striped newer Mustangs a day. I imagine it'll be the same deal once the 5th gen debuts. Also the Charger and Magnum are hot tickets as well, lots of SRT-8's and the wild looking Daytona ones. Not to mention the countless SRT-4's and now the Solstice and Sky (especially the Solstice!) are becoming common.
So in some areas its dying off but in others its actually growing. Maybe in the warmer climate people just feel the need to own a much more fun vehicle and not a toaster on wheels
