New Hemi and the future of the 360?

Does anyone know if the HEMI came out to replace the 360, or it going to be like it was 30yrs ago when you had the HEMI and 440?

Thanks
Jeremy

I believe the Dodge 360 went to the scrap heap, where it should've landed 5 years ago....

THe new Hemi pushrod engine replaces the old 5.2 and 5.9 (360) pushrod V8s

The question now is, what is going to happen with the SOHC 4.7L V8?

Alos there is a 6.1L Hemi coming out for the Heavy Duty Rams

The 360 was a punched out 340 , which was one of (IMHO) Dodge's best performance small blocks - ever.

Stiffening emissions laws in '74, I think sounded it's death knoll - or, it's rebirth as the 360.

The 360 was no slouch - remember the Lil' Red Expresses ?

But, it never had the "prestige" of the 318 or 340.

I do think the Hemi now is a superior engine, but same w/ the LS series General engines vs the classic small blocks.

Technology has done wonderful things !

I know the Hemi is in Durango - will they make a Dakota R/T w/ it as well ?

I think they should have kept it and made it a cheap alternative to the HEMI in the new Magnum/300C cars. It could possibly cause sales to be better then the will with a v6.

Why would they want to keep the old generation of engine??? the whole point of a new gen is to replace the old gen. Would you want Chevy keep the L98 for the next camaro?

They still have the 4.7L for a smaller V8.

Would you want that motor pushing around a 2+ ton car, like an Impala? I would rather have a 5.9 then the 4.7. Plus there is a decent size aftermarket for the 5.9 compared to the 4.7. With a little work on the intake and heads, I'm sure the 5.9 could do a better job then the 4.7 could.

That's first time I've heard the word prestige and 318 used in the same sentence.

In the Dakotas the truck with the 4.7 are about as fast as the 5.9L

I'd rather have the 5.7L Hemi over the 5.9L, Hemi puts out 90HP more and gets better gas milage. And for those that think the 5.7L Hemi is too much engine for them, that is what the 4.7L V8 and 3.5L V6 are for. As far as smaller Dodge V8s go, I'd like to see a smaller Hemi built. Maybe a 5.0L Hemi with 300HP

Your right about how the 4.7s are just about as fast as the 5.9s. But, with a little work a 285hp 5.9 would probably be eaisily faster then the 4.7. Your right, right now the 5.9 isnt a improvement over the 4.7, but with almost no work, it can be a big improvement.

As a former owner of a 5.9 R/T, I can confirm that the 4.7 is nearly as fast. The 3.92's are the only reason the 5.9 is fast ... not the engine. In comparison to my 94 TA .... the 5.9 R/T was slower, but had a great sound. With aftermarket parts .. the 5.9 could really put out a lot of extra HP.

If you remember Chris Pippy who used to post here a few years ago (Blown LT1 Z28), when I took him for a drive, the sound of the truck was the most attractive feature of it, not the performance.

The new hemi must be heading to the Dakota. They share everything ....

The point is that you'd have to work on it.

Put in an equal amount of effort in both, and I'm guessing it would be pretty much a draw, wouldn't it?

I've owned a couple of Dodges with 318's, there is absolutely no prestige associated with them!

Now, a 340 Magnum or 6-pack, that's different matter alltogether.

I hope they can keep the price down on a Hemi R/T Dakota. THe current R/T are a pretty good value. I though about getting one at one time, I probably would have if they offered traction control (I live in the north east)
