Derek I think you need to take a chill pill my friend. basically what I was saying is that if you rush to judgement about a car based on some blurry warped TV shots and one tiny little thumbnail of another car, you're doing yourself a dis-service and severely limiting your choices. But that's fine, because the GTO you (or someone you know) has just passed up will gladly fall in the eager hands of some other person, and fast, given the low supply. The intelligent thing to do is to wait till you can see one at NAIAS, at your dealer, whatever. Then you can decide. Trust me, it looks like no other Pontiac. It drives like no other Pontiac. It'll do circles around any previous GTO. All you ever hear about the Monaro CV8's handling/performance/workmanship is rave reviews, absolutely positive reviews where people's high expectations are met and exceeded. Either those people are all suffering from mass hysteria that you are immune to, or they chose the wise option which is to be patient and hold off on judging the car and experience it first hand. That is, unless like me you've already decided that you love it, based on the overwhelming bravo's it's getting everywhere. If you've already decided against it, then that just broadens the limited supply for everyone else, so that's a good thing! TTYL

another thing: Porsche and BMW and all those others you mentioned are great.. for someone who likes them and can afford them. Personally I don't like any modern Porsche. They went jellybean just like everyone else. I like older Porsches. BMW is out of the reach of most people here and we just prefer to support American companies and feel a sense of pride about it. I don't care about HP per cylinder and weight to HP ratios and all that jazz. There are exceptions. I care about bang-for-your-buck American cars, preferably RWD V8. Asian cars are totally impossible to fall in love with, and European cars are too expensive, too complex. That settles it for me. Oh yeah the 89 TTA was not only the only V6 Trans Am ever, but also the fastest Trans Am ever, even today.

Fastest production cars in the world?

Yeah, ok. When you're getting into 911 Turbo/GT2 "Disgusting amount of money to spend on a car" range, there are a lot faster choices out there. Like the Italians. Hell, a new Viper outruns a 911 Turbo, and a Z06 is only a few mods behind it. Wanna compare HP/$ on the high end Euro 6 cyls and a domestic V8?

I'm not sure what your whole point is anyways, are you trying to argue that it doesn't take a V8 to be fast? Sure it doesn't. That's part of the reason an M3 costs $55,000 and a Porsche 911 Turbo costs $115,000, because of the price of using the technology they use to get that kind of power.

If you want to get into "fastest production cars," the only one with a 6 in recent years was the Jaguar XJ220. But usually in your "fastest cars" range you'll have a bunch of V10s, V12s, or TT V8s.

I also hate how people skip over most of my good points when I make big posts. I especially liked my one about subtle styling being easy to modify, but you can't polish a turd. But what's this guy pick to argue with? "OH YEAH WELL PORSCHES ARE FAST!" He argues the damned footnote of my post, and not the actual post itself.

I also love the constant "YOU GUYS WILL LIKE ANY RWD V8!" arguement.

Not true at all. I think the Monaro/GTO looks great. It's clean, subtle, and classy looking. It's not a car that every cop is going to rush to his radar gun when I drive by, or that every joe blow is going to quiver in fear at at a stoplight. It's not tacky, overdone, and gaudy.

But we can't argue styling, just because I like it, doesn't mean you do. So people try to make the point that "Hey, even if you don't think it looks so hot, it's great to have this type of car back in the GM lineup, eh?" as somewhat of a middle ground, since there's no convincing anyone what looks good or doesn't. Then you get the "OH YEA PUT A V8 IN AN AZTEK WHAT-EVUH" replies.

Thumbs up I'll take it!

If I had the $30k spare green, I can't think of a car I'd rather buy--and yeah, I didn't forget about the SVT Cobra. Of course, the LS6 equipped car would be the one I'd wait for.

I didn't read this whole thread...seemed like so many other recyled threads I've argued on before with this topic. Suffice it to say, if it's too "understated" for you, chances are you're not the target audience anyways. Just don't buy the poster to put on your wall, but I don't think that'll hurt GM's sales.

It just looks too much like them and doesn't look like a musclecar.
This, I completely agree with.

Sure, I do

I post about it 20 times in reply to the 20 posts from people such as yourself praising the car.

You guys seem to be forgetting that we aren't in charge of GM stuyling department. We don't even seem to have any say in the matter at all. When the concept Aztek came out, so many people wrote to GM begging and pleading witht them not to make it. But they did anyway. So many people begged and pleaded for them not to kill the F-body, but they did. The fact is, if GM is giving us a rwd V8 car and it's biggest problem is that it's bland, well heck, I'll put up with bland! It's better than another bland fwd car. And it's certainly better than an all out ugly car (Aztek, Rendezvous, etc.) regardless of drive train. And no, if the Aztek was a V8 and rwd, I'd still hate it. AWD is a good thing, but I still hate the Aztek. The biggest problem I have with the GTO has nothing to do with looks or performance, though. It's the price. It's way to expensive for me to buy, but hopefully there will be 20k or so people who can afford it.

Bland is better than ugly, just remember.

Interesting statement...

So our mouths and fingers may have no say in the design,
but what about our wallets? There are leaders, and there are followers...

You also referenced the Aztek...
Well, maybe between the unexpectedly low sales and all the grumbling, GM DID listen on this one... LINKY.

Can't agree with you more on that one!
"Bland" is also better than "Blank".

Just .02 in thoughts.

To reinterate what Ude-Lose said, the car in person looks alot better than in pictures. It most certainly has presence, and only if you are from the "I need scoops, spoilers, ground effects, hood tachometer, and rear air wings or it's not a muscle car" school of performance cars, you won't like the new GTO, and that's OK.

On the other hand, if you think the original Thunderbird SC in dark blue or black had a menancing presence, if you prefer the design of the C5 over the C3, if you think retro isn't the answer to everything, If you would buy a BMW M3 if it wasn't overpriced by $22,000, or if you like the idea blowing away unsuspecting challengers who came from the "I need scoops, spoilers, ground effects, hood tachometer, and rear airwings or it's not a muscle car" school of performance cars, then you'll love GTO.

That pretty much sizes things up methinks.

I wonder if it will still be hideous, though? Well, I guess it couldn't end up any worse than it is now.

I think it looks alright, but I am excited about another RWD car in the GM stable. Hopfully its a growing trend over there. Give it a chance! The aftermarket is going to be a big help on this car. I also agree there will be a lot of proud Pontiac guys lining up for this 1.

I just watched the XXX DVD and saw the new GTO bit. I like it!!! Heck my wife liked it too, but I wouldn't really matter any way becaues I have more than one car...LOL. I'm glad people don't like it, that just means I'll be able to find one, or better yet find one used so it won't be so much. I think it looks good, I mean what's not to like, 300+ HP, rear wheel drive, and it's a GM drive train. So what it's a body from OZ. When I got my Formula it didn't have any scoops (does now I put on a SLP Ram Air hood) but I bought it without and I would get rid of it now for anything. So I say keep hating so I can roll a GTO!
