I was thinking the same thing. The time they are eliminating is needed to bring the RPMs down to match the ratio of the higher gear. Looking at the illustration it looked cool. It also looks like the blue and red things are just slamming it into the higher gear with no clutch.

Its that time of the year again!

Well they still have a website so I guess there's still some life there.
http://www.zeroshift.com/

New, even fancier animation to explain how it works:

However it looks like they now have another division to help keep them afloat.

5 years 11 months to go until every car will be built with zeroshift.

As long as I have this annual reminder in my Palm, this will continue.

Doesn't seem like they've made any major advances. Just added another video showing the shifting action:

They're looking for engineers so their business case must still be somewhat alive.

I'm pretty sure that DCTs will win this particular contest.

Now... how long until every car has a DCT?

DCTs will win over 'zero shift' but will they win over the long run against CVTs? I doubt it... mainly because of the simple rule that an infinitely variable number of ratios will always be better than a limited number unless the amount of parasitic loss is a good bit less in the limited application.

edit: Though for sporty cars I think DCT has a lock on the near future... those things are a blast to drive and I'd take one in a heartbeat over a CVT for that reason if a sporty sort of vehicle.

If we're being truly realistic, I'm thinking that direct-drive electric motors are the way of the future. Who needs a transmission?

maybe next year they will have a car we can go drive? At least they seem to be making some progress, it just seems to be a baby step per year.

If CVT were "all that" they would run them in F-1 instead of sequential manuals. That, or they would be "outlawed" as an unfair advantage. I don't recall of any CVT being legislated in any sanctioned series. ABS? Yes. Traction control? Yes. Launch control? Yes. Etc. ... Etc.
