New Class of Sports Cars
Hey, if someone wants to spend $30k for an ugly 4 door sedan with AWD that comes in handy every now and then, that's their perogative...I won't comment on their judgement (cough cough "insane"..)
Anyways, slt, check out an old road test of a '93 Z28, and you tell me how much difference there is...really. 5.4 sec 0-60, 1/4 mile in 14 flat or so, .88g on the skidpad...I'll grant you that the EVO probably puts down better slalom #s. But, in today's dollars, it costs $7k more than a baseline Z28 did. So you tell me, what could I do with that Z28 to get that back? Interesting...
I see the new age of performance, and I am left completely unimpressed. But no one asked me, or any one of us actually. The proof is in the sales, and right now, imports are king

From what I've seen, they do very well at autocross. Are you sure you didn't just see a bad driver? These are seriously fun cars to drive. They are more of a track car than a drag for sure.
I understand drivers have alot to do with the performance of a car in autocross. Some camaro guys run the fastest times (top 5 of the day) and some run the lowest. Some civic drivers are great, others arent. However you can get a sense of what a car can do by watching it go through a few times on different days on different courses by different drivers. From what I've seen they drivers are getting alot of body roll, and can't take turns quite as quick as other cars can. The WRX's seem to outpreform the evo's from what I've seen. Now that isn't to say I'm totally wrong and I've just seen really bad drivers, but that's what I've witnessed.
I have no doubt they're alot of fun to drive, and are great cars. Just I think theres alot more hype to them than reality.

No, the metro convertible was a convertible.
3) how can a sports car be a performance car if it does 0-60 in 10sec.? I consider the Miata just a convertable, like the Sebring.
Because performance also includes handling and braking, which the miata does quite well. Oddly enough, a substantial majority of the global motoring public considers it to be a sports car.
all those old those old british cars were sports cars by 40's 50's or 60's standards but the 00's defination of a sports car is a little different.
How so? And what's the difference between a performance car and a sports car?
I'm sure lots of people would like to expand the category to include their cars with 4 doors and roomy back seats. Then they would own a "sports car" without having to actually make any of the sacrafices in owning an impractical car.
STi's and EVO's will never be considered sports cars by anyone with an ounce of common sense. Performance cars? Absoutely? New-age Muscle cars? maybe.
Still, I think they would be much less impressive if Chevy had a smaller, lighter more modern LS1 Camaro in it's line up.

Corvette and Viper are sports cars in my book, STI and Evo are not, nor is the CTSv or M5.
I suppose I could consider the Miata a (under powered) sports car.
What if the Miata had a LS1?
and WERM, what do you consider a Raodster?

It would be dangerous as hell and fun as hell at the same time.

A roadster is a two seat convetible. It does not have to be designed around handling or performance. For example, the T-Bird is a roadster. It is not a sports car. The Metro convertible you cited earlier could probably be considered a roadster, but one must have to first consider it a car.

Trying to define a sports car, muscle car, pony car, etc. is pretty much useless. I'll simply say that the new FWD/AWD performance cars incorporate elements of each into their overall package, and that I remain optimistic about the future of performance regardless of the form that it takes.

Yeah I'd say this poll is far from scientific.
