Question New 6.2 GM V8... Whats the reason for or so special about it???

Ok I see there is this new 6.2 V8 comming out. Why are they makingn this? Didnt the 6.0 ls2 just come out a year ago? or what about the escalde 6.0? What is new about this new 6.2, and why did they add just the .2 the displacement?

6.2 has VVT and DOD and gets the 6 speed auto. The LS2 is 6.0 with no VVT, DOD, and gets either the 4 speed auto, 6 speed auto, or 6 speed stick.

Think of it as just another version of the evolving smallblock.

The L92 (6.2L) doesn't have DoD yet (coming in 2008), but it does have VVT.

It is basically just a bigger more powerfull (403HP/417tq) Gen IV V8 with VVT

Here is some more info http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do...ticleId=107941

2008(!) for DOD to show up?!

Talk about being late for the party.

The 5.3 has had DoD for a while, in both truck and LS4 (Impala/Grand Prix) applications. The only other players who have it at all are Dodge (5.7 Hemi) and Honda (3.5L V6), I believe. I don't think GM is very late to the party.

Their big trucks and SUVs are already the fuel economy leaders without DoD. I imagine they will want to keep making incremental steps to stay ahead of the competition (like Toyota's upcoming new Tundra and its V8; Nissan's 5.6 is a gas hog, IIRC). The six speed auto will spread to the smaller motors, DoD will become more widespread, the 2 mode full hybrid system will come online, and so on.

I forgot about the 5.3L.

Still, I wonder why the 1-2 year wait on DOD when these are the vehicles GM is counting on to start turning things around.

Escalade buyers will buy the SUV with or with out DoD. Even with the new 6.2L that has 58HP more, the 2007 Escalade will get better gas milage than the 2002-2006 with the 345HP LQ9 6.0L by 1-2 mpg.

The '07 with the 6.2L will get better milage and make more HP than any other lux SUV in its class.

That's still great, but....it just bugs me that these aren't the best they could be right out of the gate. This doesn't seem like something the rushed release schedule would've affected, so again GM gives us a 'very good product...but' scenario.

Maybe I'm just hypercritical today.

For a product like the Excalade, a 6 speed automatic is more important than DoD. DoD doesn't increase performance, it just saves gas. Think of Escalade buyers like Corvette buyers. They want performance, prestige, and luxury (or in the Vette toys like G-force meter and HUD)

This 6.2 also uses heads based off the LS7 heads..
which makes me wonder if then has the same bore as the LS7..
which makes me wonder, what kind of block this 6.2 really is... Cause it really sounds like its could turn into one of those budget performance blocks!

Hmmm, new generation small block with 6.2L and VVT mated to a 6 speed auto. My Firebird could use that package.

I bet this motor will be hot on the aftermarket . It will be interesting to see how the aftermarket takes to the VVT with the LSx engine .

In the movie "Batman", Jack Nickolson as the "Joker" just before blowing away detective Eckhard (sp?) yells to him: "...Eckhard.....think about the future".

You'll be hearing alot about (and probally worshiping) the GM 6.2 V8 within the next 36 months..... if not ALOT sooner.... and I'm not talking Escalades either.
