My FINAL thoughts on this Z/28 vs SS debate.....
It truly pains my heart to see us in this heated un-ending debate......all in the name of passion for the Camaro.
It needs to end NOW......it will do very little to reinforce our more important wants and wishes for the 5th gen...in the minds of GM's planners.
ALL that I have EVER wanted in this debate is for he Z/28 to be seperated from the everyday Camaro line-up and be returned to it's rightful place as a special model....optioned for performance.
Personally I believe there is a gold mine in possibilities for GM to mine in this scenario....from advertising, to magazine coverage, to showroom traffic....and on and on.....
Ford kicks GM's @$$ with their special editions....all the while creating excitement and publicity....
Finally...to me the line-up should simply be...
Base / RS
LT
SS
Z/28 as a special order, limited production.
Guys, I'm vowing to stop feeding the fire in this long dead issue....I'd like for you all to join me in this vow....we're only hurting ourselves here.

This is a rediculous issue to discuss, and I've seen it discussed here a thousand times.
It's like fighting to the death for table scraps after the big dog is long gone with the meal.
The Camaro's return is by no means assured (not publically anyway), yet I continue to see people fight over what "should" be the "top" model.
What does it matter???
For the moment, there is no model and that is what should be the focus of discussions (not what label it should wear if it ever comes back)

Well it seemed like for the longest time, it was argued whether the Z28 or the SS should be the "top" Camaro. Now, it seems somewhat established the SS is on top, at least as a flagship goes...now the debate is what should the Z28 be? So at least we got one thing nailed away
Personally, whatever Z28 does end up being, as long as it is there, I'm happy. Whether its a Z06-type of special model that runs harder than any other, or a upper-mid-level model, fine with me. Z28 has been many things...
It started as a homologation special
Then it became the top model when SS dissapeared after '72
Then it went away entirely
Then it was a gaudy, disco-era stripe and tape job with 20 more HP then a normal coupe
Then it was a pile of crap that handled awesome
Then it was subordinated to the IROC
Then it was the top car again
Then it was not
So looking through this history of Z28, what IS a Z28? Well, we know what it was...a racer, a stripe job, a pile of crap, a top model, then a mid model...
As long as there IS a Z28, I am happy. Whatever it is to me does not matter, as long as it is there, as long as it is relevant to the marketplace, and as long as it is a choice. Guys, I just want a new Camaro...

To paraphrase Sylvester Stallone in the final scene of RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD.
" Do you think that GM can indoctrinate me for 30 years worth of full on marketing...and flip a switch and I can just turn it off.
NOTHING IS OVER"
GM....just resolve it. It's not hard..and you can make everyone happy.
I don't know what the roadblock is?

And here's another thing.
This issue is a pressure cooker. I think we all tried pretty hard to skirt around it for about a week.
But the first time we got a wiff of it in a thread KAAAAAAABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! .....it just explodes.
Scott......you....and I mean, you personally, have to resolve this.
This issue can be worked to make everyone happy, no one needs to be left behind.....I'm sure of it.

This is how I think this problem should be resolved.
SS: top model, 6sp/5sp auto, 6.0 liter, hood scoop, specific exhaust, specific wheels, specific brake/suspension and any other equipment as an option.
Z28: 6sp only, hardtop only, 6.0 liter, 1LE type suspension, biggest brakes of all models, lightweight wheels and good seats, a shorter gear ratio (3.73), a short option list that will give you a extra little fluff if you like (stereo, leather ect. absolutely no t-tops/targa buy the SS model)
Berlinetta/ Type LT/ LS (they use it everywhere else might as well have it here. SS doesn't bother anyone anyways)
5.3 or smaller V8, a softer suspension, any luxury equipment you can think of.
Base: V6 / opt. V8 an optional suspension package (f41) and any other equipment you would like.
This would satisfy me.

I agree this doesn't need to be discussed any longer ...
My preference is that the Z28 be the Z06 of Camaros ... the SS the full load cruiser ...
I'm way more interested in what the car will BE than what the models are called.

And Z28/SS??? Sounds friggen stupid as hell. When I first saw a '96 prototype photo and it said Z28 SS on the fender? Stupidest thing I ever saw...
What if they let the customers decide? Like have it the same model, but the customer can decide whether or not he or she wants it to be called a Z28, Z/28, or SS. Sure they wouldnt be different model, but then the Z28 guys will have the Z as the top model, and the SS guys will have the SS as the top model.
