Mustang ST??
Mustang ST??
I've been hearing rumors from a couple of places about a possible Mustang ST.
It would supposedly be a really cheap V8 Mustang...below the GT in cost. Some have suggested that it might be the spiritual successor to the 5.0 LX.
It would have the trim and wheels from the V6...but with a V8.
Anyone hear anything?

Nothing solid yet. I've been watching this one very close. A "new" Mustang model is being revealed Feb. 4th at the Chicago autoshow and no one knows what it is yet. Of the three choices you have 1) Mustang ST 2) Mach1 3) Convertible GT
There's evidence to suggest there will be a Mustang ST but no one outside Ford really knows yet.

I would bet on the convertable.
Unless the ST is a good bit lighter like the LX was, then I don't think it will be a success. The previous GTS model was exactly that but no one took notice or cared.

There is also supposed to be a special model early in production, though I'm not sure if it's the Mach1 or this ST that everyone seems to be talking about.
Seems odd that the convertible (which isn't really considered a new model) would be showing up in FEBRUARY one month after NAIAS where it would have had a bigger impact. Makes more sense if it shows up in New York in April.
I think it'll be the Mach1 or ST though I'm leaning more toward the Mach1 as the ST is more of an option than a "new" model IMO. We were told a long time ago that there would be 3 models offered (BASE V6, GT, ???) not counting the SVT offerings. Some are even saying it will be a Shelby GT350 or something along that line.

I've said it more than once and I'll keep saying it. If Camaro wants to compete with Mustang in sales, it will HAVE TO be similar to it. This would mean a mid-level V8 at this point in time. Two V6's will NOT work. Ricers buy Civics because they're cheap (in the mid-teens$$$) AND insurance is cheap too. A V8 midlevel or not is going to be around 20K or higher and insurance will definitely be higher. Anyway, that's being covered in another thread.
There was an email on another forum saying that someone saw 5.4L N/A 3V F150 motors being tested in the 2005 Mustang mules. The 4V DOHC does NOT have VCT and most likely won't be showing up anymore in the Mustang line up. However, the 5.4L 3V would be a perfect fit for a Mach1.

If it is true about the ST (no frills, cloth seats, cheap radio/wheels/tires) then there is no reason for FoMoCo not to have had IRS on the GT, since now the "drag racers" now have their V8 and live axle, with $$$ saved for mods. All this time I was thinking the GT would be the base V8 model, but if there is a cheaper variant, the GT should have had IRS standard.
While the 2005 model may not get IRS, don't think other models won't. Besides, IRS while nice, isn't necessary. Mustang has no competition and on top of that has been selling well without IRS on a 25 year old platform. But trust me, it WILL get IRS, until then buy a Cobra
I didn't say I saw it
However, things like that can be remedied. I have hope and I think it's what Ford needs to do. The only other thing they can do is tune or s/c the 4.6L 3V for more HP and torque which is possible. I seriously doubt we'll see the 4V again until it gets VCT.

Seems this ST is creating a buzz though no one knows what it is:

I will say this, if it is a base Mustang with the new 3v 4.6 engines & no-frills, I may be very tempted to dump my GTO purchase plans for next year.
*Though I see GM's point of view on a "mid-level" V8 and support GM's position in not having one, I am strongly in favor of a low content & low priced Camaro with the top engine & suspension and little else. To me this makes way more sense & is probabally an easier sell than a mid engine
...even though alot of you probally also made this case nearly impossible when all you guys shunned the base $23,000 Z28 for the $30,000+ Camaro SS or those $28,000 loaded V6 RS Camaros simply because you wanted ground effects even wilder looks and all the bells & whistles, but that's a whole different argument.
