Mustang GT-R Concept
"Race Car" or not, it could do without the old ricer "look what I bought from K-Mart" spoiler. The photshops look better but the grill is still ugly....why do I want to see right through to the cooling fans and radiator?
The new Mustang as a whole is a pretty understated design...cluttering it up with this kind of stuff looks cheesy, like it's trying too hard.

I have to admit that it didn't sit well with me at first glance.
First time one crosses the finish line first in class in a GT, IMSA, or other sanctioned race, it will start growing on me. Cars tend to do that to me...

I know that they bring in money, and im not disputing that fact. But what bugs the hell out of me is that Chevrolet does not have any COOL concept cars out there and has only the Corvette to excite people. The SSR looks decent, but is a complete turd. The Silverado SS looks slightly better than a regular Silverado, but has very marginal performance. And then look at their car lineup. They have NOTHING that is cool, nothing rear wheel drive, nothing muscle car. Nothing that is new that will satisfy the same crowd that loves the Camaro and Firebird and Mustang for what they are, performance cars!

Your opinion of teh SSR and SS Silv. are yours, but I think they look kick ***. The Corvette is a wet dream on 4 wheels.
and outside of teh Mustang... what does ford have for the average man to get excited about? NOT A DAMN FUGGING THING! OOO look at teh 500.. or the taurus!! How bout that focus!! d00d, did you see that crown vic!! them ****z are hot!!
Yo, you can put like... some stuff in the back of that F150!!
Ford is probably more boring then anyone else. Zero design tallent, zero imagination, zero excitement. "OOO lets take an old design, revamp it, and bam!" Yeah, that takes tons of tallent. Kris Horton, a talented 19 year old in HS made a retro designed 5thgen... he doesnt have a 1/10th of the training J.Mays does.
As for the rest of the line up... lack luster at best. Outside of teh new GT, there is nothing but boring, already been done product. The Z28 was making 300hp in 97, welcome to the club. Only took you 8 years. Slap on some reto cues, and you have yourself a hit for about 3 years. Only enthusiasts are really gonzo over this design. Ask your local 16-17 year old kid what car he wants, and it aint gunna be some "old" looking car.
Buick has more exciting and attractive product then Ford does. The crowed looking to buy a fbody was slim to none in the last few years. If there was such a big draw for a sports coupe, you think they would have pulled out without some sort of replacment? Lets say that the fbody was selling about 150k units a year, but with upcoming crash standards, there had to be a change in design. Dont you think that GM would have shifted it into high gear to get a new chassis or the V chassis from Holden here to the US? Forget the politics, Im taking about a 2dr coupe to fill in for the Camaro. Call it Chevelle, Monza, Chevette, whatever, but something would have repalced the Camaro if this so called "crowd" was there. Im still amazed that GM is going to bring out another one. Im gunna get my hands on one before they take it away from me.
I hate FORD just as much as the next Chevy guy, but I have to totally give them props for at least putting out cars that get people excited and are sporty and are cool. If Chevy did that, they would be gods, but sadly, they are too worried about their Malibus and Impalas and all those other crappy cars and trucks that dont excite anyone.
GM is setting up for a large product boom, and its already started. Several brand new chassis are in production, getting ready for production, or they are 1 step away from becoming reality. Ford, they still use the 35 year old Panther chassis for the Crown Vic and sister cars.
rant off.

. They all look cheesy and over the top. I fully agree with the cheese. This is what i love about the new GT. No fake scoopary and crap. Just clean and understated. But it's no race car. There's a difference between it and this GTR concept.
I also agree with you on it being too cluttered and over the top (again, race car). But i disagree with you on the rice. You are forgetting that it is the ricers that are trying to emulate race cars, not vice versa. Race cars have big cheesy wings, and that is perfectly acceptable on a race car. Have you seen the wing on the Caddilac CTS GT car, BMW GT-R, or a porsche GT3-RS? Exactly that type.
Is it any different than this cadillac? I think you'd agree that its styling is over the top, and the wing is rediculously huge, but once you look at it as a purposely built race car, the styling and everything about it makes sense. I think you'd agree.

Either way, we won't be seeing it on streets. But i do hope that 500hp 5.0 makes its way into something (highly doubt it due to cost though).

Instead of simply rejecting the car (my tendancy) I'll simply say what I'd change if I was the guy signing off on it.
1. That horrendous rear spoiler. (I know that Ford is ensuring the Mustang continues to appeal to ricers as well as us traditionalists, but geezz!).
2. Those headlights. I see where they were trying to go with it (the outer edges of a 1969 Mustang), but it ruins the look in this case IMHO.
3. The blachout hood. I know it's possible the new Charger may have a version with a black hood as a link to Mopars past, but I didn't like it on them either.
4. The air vent behind the rear wheels. Overkill for what purpose?
On the plus side, I like the see-through grill, the hood bulge, the quarter window fuel filler, and the overall theme of the car.
I also get a feeling this is a preview of a new "Cobra-R" type of Mustang.

On your #2 point. It was a 1970 Mustang, not 1969. (I just raced one this weekend and saw several others at the car show here in Houston).
I see it more likely as a crowd test for a future Boss. The reason being it has the 1970 front cue (headlight area). Plus, pics of it on the track and it is using a 5.0L (READ 302 CUBIC INCHES). Even the paint color and scheme is similar though a different design. Just my .02

I do strongly believe that the general idea is for a production car. Whether it's a Cobra-R type car, the new Boss, or something else, I suspect that painted hood, block out windows, taillights, a tamer spoiler, and some of the other cues will show up in the future or will be available in FPG catalogues.
