They have to be joking at $40,000? Why is that, exactly?

You compare this car to a base model Corvette, but this car is faster in a straight line and in the curves than the Corvette is.

The Elise runs to 60 mph in a claimed 4.8 seconds, with the quarter-mile mark coming at about 12.0 sec.
This car is competing with the S2000 (slightly cheaper), Boxster (more expensive), Audi TT Roadster (more expensive) and outclasses them all while being unique and competitively priced. The MR2 isn't anywhere near the same class of any of these cars, I guess if you want to consider anything without a top, but the MR2 and the Miata are a lower (and much slower) class of car.

As it stands, who else is giving you 12 seconds flat in the 1/4 and awesome performance in the twisties for anywhere near this price?

How much does a used NSX run? A hell of a lot more than it's worth. I'd be willing to be the Elise would outclass an NSX of any year around almost any track that isn't all top end. About the only downfall of the Elise I can see is that it's top speed isn't too great (141mph).

PS: I've seen 10 year old NSXs sell for $25,000. And for all that money you get a 10 year old car that runs 14s!
