It looks like GM is scrambling because of PHR's story

Tom Clary of the Yenko SuperCar Registry just posted this on the message board over at http://www.yenko.net
Ever since GM stopped producing the Camaro/Firebird in 2002, there have been rumors floating around, in magazines, on the internet, etc, about a “new” Camaro being built. Well, I have been asked by a high ranking GM executive to post that GM has NO plans to re-release the Camaro/Firebird. To quote him ”it would be both morally and legally wrong to do so”. This is do in part to agreements GM made with the Canadian Auto Workers Union and numerous Canadian governmental agencies, basically stating that GM would not use the Camaro/Firebird name, nor build the cars elsewhere.

It likes like the story hit a little close to home.

The "moraly wrong" part is kind of weak, but I imagine they're not too happy about it. Don't you know that GM just hates the internet?

lets pretend they were going to make them.

before they can admit it publicly, they are legally required by contract to dismantle the canada plant....

so even if they're planning a new camaro, they cannot say so.

but to be honest, it'll be really funny if 4 years from now, there still is no camaro..

Interesting, what if the Chevelle was the one that got brought back?

Re: It looks like GM is scrambling because of PHR's story

The plant has already been destroyed...which IMO is why PHR, Hunkins and GuionM thought it OK to do the PHR story in the first place.

But the actual contract runs through 2005 so there may be some nervousness at GM about sticking to the spirit of the agreement.

Yeah, GM nowadays uses various messageboards as their method of communication.

I thought that the loan had to be repaid too before the "C" word was uttered. Maybe Guy should get in here and repost that info again and then rundown what's been met and what hasn't. As I remember it, there were more criteria than just the plant being demolished.

Why would the Chevelle name be "ruined" if they brought it back?

So when in 05' can the "C" word be used? Is it Jan. 1 05', or is it after 05' or some date in between?

Obviously you have no idea who Tom Clary is, otherwise you wouldn't have made that remark.

I believe around April to June...after the negotiations or whatever. Then if that goes well they can use the C word.

I think he fears it would end up like the GTO. Bringing names back from the past can be a dangerous thing. They have to live up to the hype and look the part too. I don't think this next "C" car will have a problem doing that.

Exactly, if they do go with "Chevelle" (God forbid) it will be the quickest, best handling, and highest performance Chevelle ever. Who on earth would not want that???

Oh, I know.... Ford Motor Company.

Re: It looks like GM is scrambling because of PHR's story

I'm with Darth on this one. Why would the Chevelle name be "ruined" if it was brought back? Personally, I don't see the name working on a car like the one we have been led to believe is in development - the market for the Chevelle has traditionally been different than Camaro, more along the lines of the GTO/GP type market than Camaro.

And just like the current GTO arguments, what is your benchmark for what a Chevelle, if brought back, should be - 64-67, 68-72, 73-77? Where do you draw the line and say that it is ruined?

At any rate, back to my point, I thought that I saw somewhere that Chevrolet stated it had no intention of bringing back Chevelle. Of course they are saying the same thing about Camaro now, aren't they?
