I know a LOT of people would love to see the supra come back

GM has till 2017 to repay the loans if memory serves.

GM has also, on their own, invested money to help develop other industries in Quebec.

Bad Idea? No. If it wasn't stuff already available in the press, THEN it would be a bad idea.

Bad Timing? Jury is still out on this.

On one hand it may bring alot of issues to a head, and will no doubt stir up the pot. On the other hand, if the story is made public and GM decides not to use the Camaro's name, it's going to become an example in the future of how NOT to do business.

GM was worried about how the press would take it and about front page coverage back when it was seriously considered to kill off the Corvette back in the early 90s. They knew the press would rake them over the coals as being inept.

If GM doesn't bring back the Camaro because of some short sighted contract whose obligations have been completely lived up to, then this is going to end up in the business section of Time & Newsweek every bit as certain as if GM killed off the Corvette.

Yes, I know. The article most certainly jacked up the stakes, and turned up the pressure. Quite a bit.

I'm new to this particular board, but I have been following this thread for a while. I have noticed that a great deal of this talk about the PHR article has been negative in regards to GM. A good portion of the last section of the article deals with what GM has done for the CAW and Canada.

The CAW and Canadian Government were both active with GM in trying to find a buyer or other uses for the the St. Therese plant for over a year. GM also expanded employment at their Oshawa plant as well as moving many former St. Therese employees to other assembly and manufacturing plants. Also, over 90% of St. Therese workers were or will be eligible for retirement and or pensions when the plant closed, or by 2005. GM is also working with premier Landry to develop new areas for Quebec's automotive industry.

With all this information presented, I don't think that it is fair to put such a dark light on GM in this situation. I don't have any "connections" or anything, but it seems to me that this article is not as bad as many have made it out to be. From everything I gathered in the article, GM agreed to keep the plant open until 2001, after which they could close it if the car wasn't profitable. That they did. They have also taken great strides to help employees and the communities around the old plant.

The article makes one last statement that I believe to be true. In the final paragraph, they mention that they have no doubt there will be another "Camaro-like" vehicle, but the name of it is going to come down to how "litigious the lawyers feel about it". We all know the way they can be.

I hope that GM does build a new Camaro sometime in the future, and I will wait as long as it takes for them to do so. Until then, I will enjoy all the renderings and hopeful candidates for the new pony car as well as reading anything that gives any indication of the future.
