There are a lot of myths about hybrid vehicles...when I saw the story yesterday, I knew I smelled fish. The battery packs on those vehicles are located in the rear, and the most potentially dangerous piece of equipment is the inverter which sits on top of the motor in the front. By circumstance it should have been "off" if the car had not yet been activated.

I'll remember not to pick up any funny looking boxes in front of my car though. That's just awful.

It could be a regular RX 350

Either way, this car might as well been a parked pinto. It blew up compliments of the bomb that was placed underneith it!

Hopefully the police find out whats up and the guy recovers.

If this was just a car bomb and nobody was worried about it being a potential defect in the car this probably would've barely made a blip on the media radar.
No this is getting a lot more press because this is a car bomb and that has terrorist kind of implications; much less attempted murder.

If this was just a very random case of a car explosion it wouldn't have made much of a splash on the national news.

There is more to this story including the victim being a former co-defendant on a wrongful death case.

The car being a Lexus hybrid has little to do with the publicity.

I guess you didn't see this when it was first posted, but most of the articles gave little indication of suspicion of foul play... the way they were worded indicated a concern that there could be an issue with the hybrid's electrical systems, and yet it was all over the place.

If you look at the first few posts in this thread before it was announced that foul play was suspected you'll see that the people on this board had a similar mindset... that something was fault on the car.

No I saw and read on Fox News and CNN as breaking news. They had pretty much already gotten word from authorities that this was foul play and maybe even a bomb or explosive device. I don't think the investigators at the scene were fooled and since they were already starting to look for suspects the media picked up on that rather quickly.

As for the speculation of internet posters...... misinformation is rampant.

The article that was linked to here specifically stated (originally) that police stated they didn't believe foul play was involved. So I guess either you didn't see it when it was truly breaking news but maybe breaking new details, or else the person writing that CNN article was misinformed.

looks like whatever exploded was in the engine compartment. or under it. However the car was parked when it blew up. And the guy would have had to have been in front of the car. there is no way he got all that if he was driving it. I wonder if the car did not start, he walked to the front to open the hood and BOOM.

I still think there was a package in front of the car, he saw it, bent down towards it, and it went off.
That would explain all the damage to his facial area and that would explain the damage to the bumper cover. From the aerial view they kept showing, it looks like just the bumper cover was torn in half and blown off. The hood was up but looked OK. The grill was still attached to it. I think the headlights were still in place & intact.
I don't think the bomb was under the hood. I think it was right in front of the car.

CNN originally put in their article (too bad I guess I didn't take a screen shot of it) that no foul play was suspected and an explosion with the Hybrid drive was being considered a possibility...

I refreshed it after posting here, and CNN had already updated the article saying they now believe it was a bomb... FYI.

I took what they said early on and ran with. My bad, I should have waited and should have known better than to trust the media with anything! In my defense though they did say it didn't look like foul play. I do hope the guy is alright though, and wasn't taking any pleasure in his injuries...
