Latest on the Ford Falcon

The bubble-stang ran from 94-98.
The bodys were identical as far as roofline was concerned.
Only fenders, light buckets, bumper covers, and ground effects were really changed to create the new edge version.
Interesting your sentiments towards one of the two when they are almost identical in overall profile.
The Falcon image at the top...
Like any of us wouldn't want to cruise around in that car up here in the states for a few months...

94-98, shows what I'm talking about
The new edge...
I liked the ridge because it added some character to the side of the car. It just kinda falls off on the "new edge" design and it's pretty boring. It'd be better if I could find two pictures from the same angle, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

You're right, they did start the new body style in 99...I keep forgetting that the body style changes were a year behind the Camaro. And yes, the bodies are basically the same, but the 99+ lacked that ridge that I really love on the 94-98's.

Essentially, this Falcon is a reskin by our standards. It will have much the same proportions (and based on the KGP photos, the same doors), but will have an entirely new skin, and massively redone front suspension and steering.
Falcon has always been an incrementally evolving car, and has virturally never been an "all new", "from the ground up" new car the way the new Holden is. This "New" Falcon follows the same path (Holden has almost never been an all new car either... it's usually been based on something else from the GM empire).
But that's not to say it won't look very different. Ford of Australia has a long history of making their cars look radically different although much underneath is a carryover.
Worth noting is that this Falcon is slated to be relatively short lived. Not by accident like BA was, but planned from the start to have a relatively short life (2-3 years). Like the Crown Vic, the chassis is tentatively slated to finally be put to rest around 2011-2012 timeframe.
The Iosis is what's expected to spin off Ford's upcoming "Global" rear drive chassis (along with the MK-R and the Interceptor), so Ude Lose, you're right.
