Isuzu to get version of GMC Canyon, new 3.0L diesel a possibility?

AUTOMOTIVE NEWS
Posted Date: 2/1/05
NEW ORLEANS -- Isuzu dealers will get a version of the GMC Canyon pickup beginning in July, the company told dealers here on Monday.

The company also said that U.S. dealers will not get a compact SUV from Thailand that had been expected for the 2007 model year.

The 2006 Isuzu pickup will come in two versions, a 4x2 extended cab with a 2.8-liter I4 engine and a 4x4 four-door cab with a 3.5-liter I5.

Production numbers and pricing will be announced at the New York auto show in March.

Isuzu is not bringing the SUV from Thailand because it will not be profitable, said Terry Maloney, president of Isuzu Motors America Inc.

Maloney also told dealers that Isuzu will develop a new diesel engine in the 3-liter class that will be sold in the United States. No date has been set for the diesel. -Kathy Jackson

Before i even read the title, i was thinking "Hopefully Isuzu will offer a diesel option on their version". They mention a new 3.0L Diesel engine but mentioned no vehicle, and i hope that makes its way into this canyon twin. So far that i know of, no one offers a diesel option in a compact or mid-sized truck and so this would be first in its class. I think it would prove to be a popular option. I know it'd be a major selling point for me. If the Isuzu version does end up getting it, i hope it makes its way into the Canyon and Colorado as well.

Hmmm, I would assume that they are just bringing over the "DMax" (their GMT355 truck that is already on sale in Japan).

A diesel would KICK ***. I really dig that you can get the Liberty with a diesel now. A small, 4 cylinder turbodiesel in a Canyon could net 30 mpg or more. Sweetness. I've been thinking of picking up a 4 or 5 cylinder, 5 speed Colorado/Canyon for a while now. A diesel would almost make it a slam dunk.

This would deffinatly be a good idea. Jeep's Gladiator pick up concept had a TD engine that I belive came from the Liberty, and that should have GM running for Isuzu's engine team for the little diesel.

That article makes to sound like it won't be the Japanese GMT355 (D-Max) but instead just a rebadged GMC Canyon. I'd trade my Colorado for a 3.0L TD. This would also give GM an edge on the competion. Hybrid MPG with Diesel torque and long term reliability.

I'd have to say that after looking at all these varients, the foreign designs look much better than the domestic. I don't get it. Does GM design ugly vehicles for the US on puprose?

If GM would quit using all that black plastic junk on their trucks, just chrome it or paint it body color, their trucks would look a thousand times better. Just look at a Silverado SS versus a regular Silverado. Or a color keyed Z71 Suburban versus a normal Suburban.

If you ask me the overall shape of the GMT 355 is good, but all the details make it way too tacky, especially models with the black plastic crap.

You sound like a good candidate for the GMC Canyon. I think it looks a little classier than the Colorado, especially with the Z71 package, since the Canyon's fender flares are body color while the Colorado's are black.

Oddly enough, though, in the S10/Sonoma years, I preferred the black flares on the S10 ZR2 to the body colored ones on the Sonoma Highrider.

It is the same truck, or are you talking about the D-max?

Most Colorados and Silverados don't have any black plastic. My Z71 Colorado doesn't have any black plastic. on the Z71 you do have the option of black or body color fender flares. Black plastic ones are better for work trucks.

I read it once before. It was tuned pretty conservatively since it is sold it 3rd world contries. MPG>towing power for them. Out wasn't even close to the Jeep Diesel, but that is also tuned for MB and the USA.
