From India: Tata Nano, $2500, 54 MPG

http://jalopnik.com/343003/the-2500-...eiled-in-india

Summary:

Indian automaker Tata Motors has finally unveiled the Tata Nano -- its already legendary $2,500 (1-lakh)car. As expected, the car that Tata claims will change the face of not only the Indian car market, but the global auto industry will be a four door, five seat hatch, powered by a 30 HP Bosch 624 cc four stroke engine mounted out back and mated to a CVT. That makes the Nano the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine will be used in a car with a single balancer shaft. The Nano's also expected to get 54 US miles per gallon.

Wow, look at those tires. I think my lawnmower has larger wheels than that (litterally).

Interesting. Now let's see what happens to Jaguar and Range Rover when Tata gets their hands on them.

I would love to see that car, with 5 people in it, trying to go up a hill.

And is the top speed of that 45mph?

There's no way that's going to hit the US market at $2500 and still meet all US standards, and if it somehow does, they'll get chased out by lawsuits from the inevitably substandard quality of parts and assembly used and people who die in 25mph head on collisions with suburbans.

Compared to motorcycles and bicycles these cars are exponentially safer. Don't forget that Indian streets are a lot different than American.

54mpg cars are another reason India will continue to not be as phased by high oil prices as North America.

30hp. Damn, Frickin Geo Metros had more than that in their 3cyl!!

It will never sell here, too small to be deemed safe at 3.1meters in length. That's like 10 feet long.

Most people who buy this are in need of a car and don't have a Public Highway Safety Administartion in their country.

Amen. Not a chance of passing US Federal motor vehicle safety requirements, from what I've seen so far.

Plus, the Oklahoma State Police would be gunning for them

Id love to see interior pics. You can see that the A-pillars are bare, I wonder if it even has a headliner. Does it have floorboards or is that where you stick your legs out to help get it going?

It isn't meant for the US market.
