. . . a reduced-power mode that comes into play if you run the car hard. Looks like it's a known issue on the G37.

I'd be extremely pissed if the next car I bought was rated at "XXX horsepower (unless you run it hard) and had a redline of YYYY (unless you actually run up near it for a while)."

In fact, I wonder how these nanny-power cars sit with the SAE horsepower measurement standard--and if there are legal ramifications for not disclosing "well, yeah, this car won't actually make its rated power if you actually use it."

Some litigious young fella might have a field day with this one.

The GT-R sold in Japan cuts off the speed limiter at 112mph... try running any sort of real race with that kinda limiter. You can bypass it but have to pay the dealer a fee to inspect the car and 'reinstate' the warranty afterward.

I sure hope they face enough of an uproar over this that they never try to pull that BS here in the states again. They can nanny away in Japan, though.

I've seen a lot of cars go into limp home mode if they think they are being abused.

I've seen Nissans do it. I've seen Hondas do it. I've seen Subarus do it. I've even seen Corvettes do it.

It's not a unique situation with the G37.

This isn't limp home mode. This is a calculated reduction in the power output and redline of the car, with no codes set. This is nannyism.

Huh?

Six of the first ten posts in that thread refer to it as a "limp mode". The board won't let me read further than that.

And yeah, a calculated reduction in the power output and redline of the car is exactly what a limp home mode is.

I have no idea if the cars I've seen do this threw a code. I've never actually experienced it in a car I've owned.

Cliffs:

"I had to manage the G37's stupid limp mode thing it does after about 15 minutes of hard driving. If I revved all the way to redline and kept my foot in it through the straight the car would start reducing power and eventually dropping the redline."

"Other G37 drivers have also noticed it. It seems to happen with extended hard driving. Basically the engine starts out pulling power, it won't open the valves as far as it should. If you keep driving hard eventually it starts dropping the rev limit."

This is calculated, gradual reduction in power, not catastrophic "limp home mode."

When Clarkson took the GT-R to the track on Top Gear, he said its GPS knew it was at a race track and automatically removed the limiter. Not sure if you're still supposed to go back to the dealer for "inspection" after that though.

First post reminded me of ricers and Vtec.

Who really would want a nanny to control power?

I would characterize it as a de-rate, not a limp.
