HUMMER Sale to Tengzhong Cannot be Completed
Wind down of HUMMER business to begin
2010-02-24
DETROIT – General Motors today announced that Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd. (Tengzhong) was unable to complete the acquisition of HUMMER. As a result, GM will begin the orderly wind-down of the HUMMER operations.
“One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest HUMMER, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for HUMMER along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said John Smith GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances. "GM will now work closely with HUMMER employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner."
GM will continue to honor HUMMER warranties, while providing service support and spare parts to current HUMMER owners around the world.

So is there a big loss here? Design/engineering/marketing were all GM employees (and have been out of work or been moved to other projects for a while). AM General will shut down its Hummer line doing the H2 and H2 SUT. GM will kill the line in Shreveport, LA building the H3 and H3t.
I do feel for the dealers who spent all the money to build the conquest huts and offroad courses only to have the brand killed a short time later, maybe they should try to get Land Rover or Jeep franchises.

The dealers around me only put up Hummer signs on existing lots, smart move.
I'm not sure how much work was done on the next H3 or H4, but maybe some of that can find its way into a GMC in the future. Makes you wonder if GM new this was coming as the H2 was never moved over to the GMT900 HD platform.
BTW, anyone know what GM paid for the rights to use the Hummer name? Even though the brand ended after only ~10 years I bet it was still well worth it. H2 and H3 had a lot of profit.

The wrangler is a nitch vehicle that appeals to those who want to put up with the ride/ rough edges. Will always have a faithful following. I think GM's closest attempt could have been the Chevrolet/ GEO Tracker which earned zero respect.
Goodbye Hummer, I won't miss you

I only know of 1 Hummer dealer, but they are also successful with GMC and Cadillac so I think they will be fine.
