How big can a 5th gen be?

I hear alot of people saying a 5th Gen Can't be too big. That got me thinking....

Say a 5th Gen Camaro is about the same size as the current GTO, just a little lower, wider and sleeker (to take away the Monaro's jellybean shape)....would that make it too big?

I am saying body proportions like this, not the styling, just the body shape.

The Current GTO=
Wheelbase: 109.8"
Overall length: 189.8"
Overall width: 72.5"
Overall height: 54.9"
Weight: 3725lbs.

2002 Firebird=

Wheelbase: 101.1"
Overall length: 193.3"
Overall width: 74.4"
Overall height: 51.2 "
Weight (A4 Formula): 3517lbs.
(M6 Formula): 3495lbs.

I like the current GTO's wheelbase to overall length ratio, so I say keep that. Other than that, take 3" off the top of the current GTO and make it say 2" wider and you have pretty similar dimensions to teh 4th Gen.

One thing to not, the GTO weighs 200lbs more, but that is because it was designed for Austrailia who likes cars witha bit more bracing and steel in then then neccessary. Also movig the gas tank in the current car has some kind of weight penalty.

If the Next Gen performance chassis is built off say a a Hybrid Sigma/VE platform it should be easy to shave 200lbs out since Sigma uses alot of aluminum.

With the exception of the 3rd gen, Camaro's have never really been light cars anyway...so i don;t see a 3400-3500lbs Camaro bad long as it has the muscle to move it..

In short after seeing the numbers, a Next Gen GTO based Camaro really isn't all that objectional

I think that the next gen should have a longer wheel base with short overhangs and weigh as close to 3000lbs as possible.
IMO the perfect size is the 79-93 Mustang with a longer wheelbase.

The GTO and the 4th gen are somewhat similar in outside diminsions if you look at the specs you listed. As long as the 5th gen isn't as small on the inside as the 4th gen, it'll be cool with me.

Smaller overhangs are needed for sure.

I could accept a few inches shaved from overall length , but I want that "Camaro presence".

Camaro is not a sport compact.

I don't think a smaller/nimbler car will be percieved as a sport compact. Was the fox Mustang thought of as a sport compact?

It's hard to have your pie and eat it too....a new camaro will not be near 3000lbs...

I think the GTO's wheelbase to length ratio is fine.

I'm just giving my opinion. Why can't the Camaro weigh that much they did it with the Z06. I know it's not gonna happen, but what if?

Low, wide, and aggressive.... that is what I want. Size is important!

Z06 uses titanium exhaust, extra thin windshield and a a bunch ove other expensive stuff to get to that weight. That is on top of the crap the Corvette alread has to make it light that costs and arm and a leg. I would rather a 3500lb Camaro than a $35-$40K one.

I am just saying that it's possible. I wouldn't want to pay that much either, but a 2002 SS coupe cost that much if you got all the options and it still weighed at least that much.

I think the only way a Camaro could come in under 3000 lbs would be make it off the Solstice chassis...and that is not slated to get a V8

I think a weight of around 3300 is acceptable and practical. Isnt that how much current Mustangs weigh? If so, I think thats about where the Camaro should be.

All depends...there is a big differenc in the weight between a V8 and a V6. A V6 Camaro weight right around 3300lbs....the V8 weighed nearly 3500lbs. That being said I am unsure of Mustang weights..but I could have swore I saw that a V8 Cobra weighed 3500lbs.

Overall length....180-183"

Very short overhangs

Weight...........V8's to wiegh no more than 3300 lbs, ( maybe a Z06 style Z/28 could weigh 3200lbs).

For all those that want Camaro to remain a big honkin' car....please buy an SUV and be done with it.
