Have interiors always been so important?

3rd gens look good on the outside... But the interior is a definite low point. The crappiest ergonomics ever, lame pull-me-off door panels, ugly *** instrumentation, the chop-your-head-off-in-an-accident extended dash cover..... FUGLY.
The 4th gens have awesome interior. Especially the 98+ IMO.

I think most people's first priority is that the car can get them from point A to point B reliably.
But now that almost every car on the market will do that for at least the first 100k miles, if not 2-3 times as much milage as that, manufacturers have to look to other areas to set their cars apart from the rest.
Furthermore, as was mentioned, people are driving much longer distances and much more often these days than ever before. I don't know about you guys, but for example when I hop in my truck for the first time in a couple of days and drive 10 miles down the road, I usually don't think a thing about its cheap interior. But after 400 miles has gone by with little more than a rest stop and I've been hearing the same 15 rattles and squeeks non-stop, the road noise is giving me a headache, and my back is stiff from a lack of proper lumbar support, I start to get more annoyed with my truck and start to notice more things wrong with it... and aside from major powertrain issues, the first thing people are going to notice with their car is issues with the interior, since that's what they see 98% of the time they are doing anything with it.
