I'm a little cynical, so I'm doubtful we'd see a concept wearing the Camaro badge in January at NAIAS, for 2 big reasons.
1) Doesn't the dreaded CAW/Camaro contract prohibit GM from publicly using the Camaro name until 2005?
2) C6 is debuting at NAIAS 2004. I doubt Chevy wants any thunder-stealing at that show. I personally think there'd be no better way to make a statement than to show BOTH cars there but knowing GM the way I do (cynical part talking again), it ain't about to happen folks.
Write it down. NAIAS 2005.

On the contrary I think GM will do everything to steal the thunder from the 2005 Mustang when it get unveiled @ the 04 NAIAS as well.
While the new Stang will be a huge hit, GM will do a one-two-punch and show-off the new production Vette and a new Concept Camaro at the same time.
This way when all the car magazines start talking about the new Mustang they will also write about the return of the new Camaro/Mustang rivalry. Everytime the new Stang gets mentioned there will most likely be a little writeup about the specs of the new Camaro and when it will be released for the next-gen showdown.

I certainly hope they show it in '04--not only would it be a big dent in the Mustang (and maybe reason enough for my wife and I to cancel our order for one), but it would also help end the whining about "Chevrolet doesn't have anything interesting except for Corvette."
Imagine a new Corvette (production) and a new Camaro (concept) side by side! Very nice!

Wow. Thanks for the report.
A few questions...
Did they actually say the word "Camaro"? As in "This is a concept Camaro" or just kind of say "What do you think of this?"
When you were desribing it, I sort of thought of Chevelle characteristics, which, in my mind, makes sense as a Chevy version of the next GTO.
Excellent work

Very good info. I don't like the fact that they are sticking that bar across the grill and spoiling it but oh well.
The interior if it is done as you say then wouldn't it add a lot to the bottom line base car?
Any more information such as engine choice, transmission (how many gears on the manumatic/any other details on it?)
I know this sounds like a dumb q. but do you remember what the rear windshield looked like? (It may point us in the right direction of what car this actually might end up being)

No information about power train. But one of the question in the general info. section (before you got to see the concept) was "Select from the list below the options you feel the car must have (huge checklist of about 50 items)". Under other I wrote down 350 RWHP
.The rear is not that different from the SS concept, it had a very short deck. I did not see a trunk seem and the glass was slightly inset from the rear quarter panel pillar. The glass inset reminded me of a LEXUS GS430. I can't say for sure it was a hatch but a hatchback falls in line with the questions they asked in part 3 of the survey, 60/40 flat folding rear seats configuration.
Hope that answered your questions.

To those who have made their minds up already please open your yoursleves up to something new. The old formula wasn't working if we are to get an affordable GM RWD performance 2+2 coupe then it may not be true to some of of the Camaro or Firebirds heritage in every aspect of the word.
My example is the Mazda RX8 returning after the RX7. Much the same but more user friendly in its layout and design. Revolutionary in the use of the rear doors. Yet not loosing the heart of the cars heritage.

Ya, I'm so giddy right now to have something new and exciting to sink our teeth into that I am not obsessing on the fact that the phrase "retro looking" has been mentioned... :blah: :blah: :blah:

You have to be a 1st gen fanatic to be able to pick of the RETRO design cues. If I new nothing about Camaro's history, I probably would have thought the design was entirely new. One more thing, unlike the SS concept this coupe did not seem bubbly and bloated to me. Very streamlined, very mean looking.

Supertim, if that indeed is the direction of the next Camaro, I'm wondering how the T-tops are going to come into play myself.

Big news indeed, nice job
I'm a nay-sayer and I wouldnt think GM would release a C6 and F5 at the same time, however, from what has been posted the Camaro team was dissolved into the Vette team, so they would have the funding currently to pull off such a task.
I just dont want a damn retro car.

I would think if this next camaro concept gets a favorable response during the 2004 carshow season they would give it an official greenlight a year from now. I dont know how fast GM can get from concept to production but I would guess it could be 3 years in a best case scenerio but more likely 4 years if there are any kinks in the process like the Chevy SSR. Even 4 years from now could put it into a late model year 2007 release to give it the extra hype with the 40th anniversary. I would think the first full year production wouldnt start til the 2008 MY.
If this new concept flops then I really doubt will will see a new Camaro before 2009 or later. I would also think that this car will be built off the next-gen GTO platform and not the Solstice. The next gen V8 version of this Camaro will most likely start @ $30,000-$35,000 in 2007/2008 dollars if its on the same platofrm as the GTO.

Agree!! 2 car Camaro and Corvette( Mustang who!)
I must admit that when i read this news I almost Cry!!
If the Caw has something to do with the Camaro name it doesn't matter
GM can use
Z28 concept
Panter Concept
I knew it!! NAIAS what better date do show a new Camaro than the same time that the Mustang will start production!!
It looks like whe are Back!!
