That would be a fun job.

I have killed THREE, yes 3 Dell GX270 Optiplex motherboards in the last 4 months. I run lots of 3d CAD and analysis software, and apparently the capacitors don't like much abuse. All three were capacitor problems on the main board. The Dell rep just replaced the boards and left each time.
PS - the only hint that it is going is when you drag your mouse over text to cut/copy/paste, and you actually hear the motherboard start making a squealing noise while you are loading the RAM. The next hint is your screen going blank and smoke coming from the back of your desktop cabinet.
I have "benchmarked" several new Dell computers lately, and I wonder why they are still doing so well?
Sorry - Back to the thread topic...

Right back on topic.
I see no problem with a company buying another company's product to rip it a part and see whats wrong with it.

A case of "reverse engineering" gone awry if there ever was one. Some blame espionage...

The Japanese do it as much or more than the rest. I personally worked in the Engineering dept (Japanese company)and working closely with the Q.A. dept, for new product development, I have see them buy several competetors product, monthly. We tore them apart, took measurements, and did comparatives studies on them. In the end, it let us know where we stood, where we needed to improve, and even how much they had reversed our designs.
I think it helps the progress of technology, as long as there are no patent right infringements.

Speaking of Dell capacitors, I just setup 40 or so new Dell GX620s with January production dates. Lets hope they got the kinks worked out.
I went to WD Raptor drives on all of them as well... no failing maxtors for me.
