GM to return Opel to the US?
AutoWeek: Opel Aiming for U.S. Comeback
AutoWeek magazine says that Opel executives are talking about a comeback for the U.S. market. The weekly magazine reports from Europe that Opel design chief Martin Smith and GM Europe boss Mike Burns will ask GM to begin shipping Opel models to the U.S. again for the first time since GM halted the flow of cars from Europe to North America in the late 1970s. The execs, the magazine says, will push GM North America to import the Opel Signum and Vectra wagon that will be shown at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September, following the mold of the Holden Monaro program that will bring the Australian-built coupe to the U.S. as the next Pontiac GTO.

I think this is more an OPEL want than something GM will do. Opel is like the red headed stepchild of GM and I seriously don;t see those sedan and wagon models here with the Malibu and Malibu Maxx coming.

Actually, Oldsmobile was killed because it simply wasn't selling. GM made a commitment to Oldsmobile in product and resources that simply didn't bring any results.
This is one of those seemingly rare instances where GM actually put money where it was clearly needed. The Aurora became the new standard at GM, being the most solid structure and one of the best assembled cars made in the US. The chassis was eventially shared with Buick & Cadillac. Ironically, it's those divisions where people seemed to be going instead.
Believe it or not, GM actually tried to save Oldsmobile!
