GM Recalls - NY Times 4/28 Article
There was an article in today' new york times stating tht this year alone, GM recalled more cars from jan 1 to today, april 28th, than it did all of last year, and more than any of the competitors. sheesh.
Do all those GM recalls = how many times the Focus has been recalled since it came out
All manufacturers have their fair share of recalls , it happens . At least GM is voluntarily fixing problems .

believe it or not.... This is the biggest amount of cars recalled, I have article upstairs... but this is more than the focus recalls, more than all of the Ford/ Dodge/ GM recalls of the past 3 or 4 years.
and this is for Jan 1 to March 30th.
and this is for Jan 1 to March 30th.
I saw on FOX news Monday night where VW/Audi is recalling 1-million vehicles for suspension failure?!?!
Including the A4, A6, and top VW units like Jetta and Golf.
Didn't look for any articles, cause frankly I didn't really care!

Ok, if you think 1 million is alot... here are the statistics....
1999 - GM 3.5 mil recalls, Frd 6 mil, Daimlex 5.75 mil
2000 - GM 5.9 mil recalls, frd 7.5 mil, DCX 6.6 mil
2001 - GM 2.5 mil recalls, frd 5.5 mil, DCX 2.6 mil
2002 - GM 4.6 mil recalls, frd 2.2 mil, DCX 6.5 mil
2003 - GM 7.5 mil recalls, frd 3.5 mil, DCX 2 mil
2004 Year to dateGM 7.6 mil recalls, frd 1.3 mil, DCX 2 mil
So now, please tell me who Audi's 1 mil compares to GMs 7.6 million recalls.?
seems like 2002 GM took a turn for hte worse.

What percentage of Audi production is 1 million, compared to the percentage of production for GM?
That is a way to see things a bit more clearly.
GM seems to recall every little thing.
I just got a notice in the mail for a recall on my 2002 silverado for the tailgate cables. I checked them and they are in perfect shape. But i bet this counts towards that 7.6 million. It included all of the new trucks from 99 and up. I am not saying this is the bulk of the recalls, but i best most are for stupid stuff like it.
I think they had 3 huge recalls in a one week span not too long ago.
Darth has a point. In the case of Audi/VW vs GM, sheer numbers don't mean much. Audi/Vw sales here in the states is almost miniscule in comparison to GM. GM"s full size truck sales alone eclipse the VW/Audi sales here in the states, and by a 2 to 1 margin. So GM could only recall half their full sized trucks, and VW could recall every single car they've sold, and the number of GM truck recalled would still be more.
What's that saying, "The bigger they are, the harder they fall"??
.
Still, this number of recalls (even for a giant like GM) is bad.

GM also sells more cars and has more brands (so more cars off a single patform), so sales and platform sharing hut it in this respect.
One defect in a W-body car or a GMT-360 can effect millions upon millions of cars.

Suppose you are moving, and you are loading a fridge onto the back of your truck...
You and a buddy lift the fridge onto the tailgate, and you tell him to hang on while you jump into the bed of the truck to pull it the rest of the way into the bed. Right when you jump onto the tailgate the shock load of your weight combined with the dead weight of the fridge cause a faulty cable crimp to let go. You then find you and a fridge wrestling for the same real estate. Who wins... you or the fridge? You break an arm or leg, maybe your back and become paralyzed, or worse yet suffer a brain stem separation and die from it instantly - WHO KNOWS.
But all it takes is your spouse or parents to have a forensics engineering investigation reveal that the cable crimp was faulty, and GM serves up a dish of $million$.
Liability lawsuits are the #1 cause of recalls bar none. If the carmaker has reserves deep enough to go ahead and get it overwith before the lawsuits begin, they do so. It's a basic course in economics from then on.
I know that's kindof a lame example, but crazier things happen every day. I read yesterday where a 16y/o girl split a transit bus in half in LA with a 2001 Mustang... explain THAT to me logically.
So please don't assume that because the part is small or inexpensive, that the potential risk isn't huge.
