GM has a plan to keep Pontiac buyers...

Watch out if you own a G8...looks like you may be getting spammed with Impala ads soon

Learning from Oldsmobile

GM failed to hold on to many Oldsmobile buyers after it killed that brand in 2004, LaNeve said. This time will be different, he said, because GM will use sophisticated electronic marketing techniques to target Pontiac owners and it is expanding its other model lineups to offer alternatives.

“We didn’t do as well as we would have liked on retaining Oldsmobile customers,” LaNeve said. “We’ve got a better process now because of information technology” to retain Pontiac customers, such as targeted e-mail promotions.

If the company can recognize a need to keep Pontiac buyers - WHY are they killing it?

You didn't see him say "Saturn buyers..." "Saab buyers..." or "Hummer buyers..." in his quote, correct?

Pontiac was the Governments move.

EDIT

This just burns me right here....

“A lot of Pontiac buyers, young, blue-collar women, may not like the rest of the GM lineup,” Wolkonowicz said. “They’re certainly not going to buy a Buick.”
Ladies and gentleman. Who makes the car buying decisions in homes? WOMEN. So, lets go ahead and get rid of a brand that has a large number of female buyers.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

Pontiac wasn't profitable. What good is a sale if it cost you money. If they want the sales back all they need to do is start selling Chevys, Buicks and GMCs at a loss. How about a $17,995 Camaro LT or $15,000 Malibu.

Just the Camaro - less two doors...... and CTS, but that may be a bit of a stretch, no V8 unless you pony up for a V and that's more than a little out of the G8 league - price-wise anyway.

Knowing GM they likley think the Impala is a replacement for the G8. Remember this is the same company who had a marketing manager for GM that thought Pontiac's were known for, and their owners expected fuel efficiancy.

I don't think the G8 and Camaro are significantly cross shopped. The only common thread is the drivetrain. In terms of how one uses a car, they're worlds apart. The G8 is roomy and practical for a family; Camaro is anything but. I suspect the V6 CTS would be more likely to be cross shopped by G8 buyers (remember not all G8s are V8s), as both are RWD enthusiast cars that can also legitimately be family cars as well. I know for me, I was looking at both.

GM better exhale if they think they are getting this Pontiac buyer back anytime soon. Other than the 'Vette, there is NOTHING in their current lineup that interests me at all. Nothing.

Yep.

Just as Ford will be stupid when/if it ditches Mercury

GM also admitted this week the a lot of Saturn and Pontiac buyers would not consider Chevrolet and that they hoped to draw in those buyers (as I suggested and was laughed at for) with Buick.

Looks like the new GM is as clueless as the old GM.

Killing Pontiac was suppose to thin out overlap. Why kill Pontiac then expand other model lineups.....Just keep Pontiac, it was the 2nd best selling brand!
There are some complete idiots running GM.

How is less brands/models going to equal more sales?
