GM to build new V-8 engine in Tonawanda, N.Y.
The Detroit News

General Motors Corp. said it will invest another $300 million in its Powertrain Tonawanda engine plant, bringing its total investment in the New York factory to $1.5 billion over the past 10 years.

The new capital will be targeted to the production of a new dual overhead cam V-8 engine, with production scheduled to begin in 2009. The Tonawanda plant already makes engines for products ranging from the Chevy HHR and Malibu to the Hummer H3.

"This all-new engine will play a critical role in GM's exciting future luxury vehicle portfolio," said John Buttermore, GM Powertrain vice president of global manufacturing.

Renovation of the Tonawanda plant will begin in the fall.
What vehicle is this engine going in? Anyone have any ideas?

Well it does state luxury cars in the article... but I hope GM makes a serious attempt at designing a full blooded V8 without compromise, to rival the V8s, V10s ... from BMW, Merc etc...

Me? I'm happy with my pushrod V8... but my kind of V8 would never seriously be considered by the luxury crowd.

Duramax is going DOHC in '09 supposedly, but GM doesn't make it anyway. I have no clue.

Sounds like the Ultra V8 that's replacing NorthStar. So expect it Cadillacs and maybe top end models in other brands.

What is the "Ultra" V8? I have seen it menitoned on other forums, but have not seen details. Is this a thoroughly revamped northstar? Is it a 100% new design? What is it slated to power, CTS, STS, SRX, XLR? Will any lower brand vehicles get the "Ultra" V8 (Chevy,Saturn,Buick,GMC)?

A non V CTS with a V8 would be nice to keep pace with the twin turbo 335i.

Yea there will be an Acadia Denali at least. Im sure Enclave will get it too. Don't really remember if the plan included V8's for the Saturn or Chevy.
