GM Asian sales up 37.9 percent in second quarter

Buick sales have passed Chevrolet in AP!

Here is a breakdown by market & brand

GM Asian sales up 37.9 percent in second quarter

General Motors saw the same continued growth in the Asia Pacific market last quarter as it has seen all year. Sales were up 37.9 percent compared to a year before – fueled primarily by hefty demand for Buick and Wuling, the Chinese brand owned 34 percent by GM.

Buick sales were up 73.6 percent to 114,337, which brings year-to-date Asian-market Buick sales to 196,108 vehicles, itself a 33.8 percent increase from first and second quarter combined sales last year.

GM’s largest brand in the market, Wuling, saw a 66.8 percent increase to 261,758 cars in the second quarter, for a total of 492,533 cars so far this year. Wuling is 34 percent owned by GM, but the automaker has a contractual right to report the Chinese company’s sales.

So far this year, the automaker is just short of 1 million units sold in the Asia Pacific market, which includes China, Japan and Australia. That figure, a 21.5 percent increase over last year’s number, does fall short of the 1,157,023 cars the automaker sold in its core North American market. GM North American sales, which include the United States, Canada and Mexico, are off 39.5 percent this year.

Why do articles like this so often leave out very crucial information such as how much are Chinese auto sales up as a whole?? This will help us determine what percentage of these gains are actual progress on GM's part and what percentage of the gains are reflective of China's huge surge in consumer purchasing power and the trend for Chinese to own a car.

If GM's Asian sales are up 38% but Asian auto sales as a whole are up 50% then GM is actually losing ground, but you'd never think so based on the numbers in this article.
