ok.....lemme ask you this.....
-----what makes you think the LS2 is the final word in engines???
also....
there's a big difference in weight....and just as importantly, a difference in aerodynamics................
Finally.......I seem to recall that there were TWO LS1s......(well, OK, 4 from 1998 thru 2004.......)
so....................I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

I hope that GM actualy released real power ratings for the LS2.
Your gunna tell me that the LS2, which has a higer CR, better cam, LS6 flow like heads, larger cam, higher flowing tb and intake, and exhaust manifolds makes 5hp less then the LS6? Am I the only one that thinks this is a tad off?
The vette will always be the speed king because of weight and aerodynamics, but whos to say that the next camaro has to be rated 15hp less then the Vette? Why? To staisfy some vette owner? The Vette is gunna be faster stock for stock.
and Im sure that there will be minor upgrades in the LS2 in a few years. But I want to know is how long can GM keep improving on the Gen IV engine? I guess is possible if you think about it, and I find that the most amazing thing about engines.

I think anyone would be pretty foolish to think it's going to be rated at 400 hp and get 450 (as some seem to prove with their view of ALL LS1s), but it will produce more than the LS6.
BTW: The LS6's horsepower rating is exactly what it's advertized at, right around 405. Being that the LS2 is basically the 6.0 truck engine with LS6 heads, the actual horesepower should be about 10 or so more than the LS6.

I'm glad to see you preach this to the masses RP.

This practice also let's GM move through remaining stock of the old style engines... while ramping up production of the new style.
Glad to hear it, if it's true. The SSR needs a serious powerplant (and 6-spd) to add some credibility to what is otherwise an over-priced truck with novelty-roof. I hope they maintain close to the same pricing and make the LS2-variant the standard engine.
And how about a few new styling touches to freshen the styling, show off the new muscle. It may have been out but for two model years, but it seems like the SSR is at least 5 years old already!

If a Camaro was as good as the Vette in terms of performance, and was somewhat more practical, for less money...why even make the vette? The corvette is as close to no-expense-spared as you will get in GM, so therefore of course its going to be the best of everything.
Those that wish for Corvette's supreme spot in GM hierarchy to go away don't really know what they are wishing for IMO.
I reported this last month. The Trailblazer SS, Silverado SS, and SSR will all share the same 385HP 6.0L and 6 speed drivetrain. The SSR I am guessing will get it first since it is the halo truck. Also 385 is a number I am confident in, but it will definatly be less than whatever 6.0L in the Vette is making at the time. This all fits with what Red said.
Trio of 385 HP Trucks Coming at GM!
The Silverado SS has been a hot topic of discussion lately with all the hype surrounding the new Dodge Ram SRT-10 and it’s earth shattering 500 horsepower. Many GM enthusiasts have been wondering when GM will put some of the internal expertise that GM Powertrain has to offer towards making a truck worthy of the SS name. This has led to several conflicting reports as to what the future holds for GM performance trucks. One report has the Silverado SS getting a supercharged engine in 2006. Another report on this very site predicted the Silverado SS would simply be getting a bump in power using a naturally aspirated engine. I can say I myself have been pulling my hair out trying to guess what direction GM is going on this one. Ironically in the end it turns out that pretty much everyone is right.
For 2005 the Silverado SS will see virtually no changes, as it won’t be until 2006 things get interesting. One thing not understood about the current SS is that it is capable of much more horsepower than it is making. The Vortec 6.0L in the Silverado SS is easily capable of 400 HP, however the AWD system it uses can not handle that kind of power, so GM was forced to detune it to 345 HP. This will change in 06 as GM will roll out a standard cab, short box, RWD SS that will sport a 6 speed manual. GM already was showing a similar truck at shows last year that had people talking. What’s more is that this 6.0L/six speed combo will also see work in the 2006 Trailblazer SS, and a future SSR. The Trailblazer SS shown earlier in the year has esentially the production version of this new truck 6.0L rated at a hefty 385HP. It is our belief that all three trucks will have this same 385 HP rated 6.0L. It is known that we will see the production ready Trailblazer SS at an autoshow later in the year, however it is the SSR that may get the new engine and 6 speed first. This may happen in the 2005 model year run with the justification being that it is the halo vehicle for GM’s truck line. That however is dependent on if GM can get the engine and transmission certified in time, which time will only tell.
As for the rumors of a supercharger on the Silverado SS, I must admit I called it a baseless rumor many times, which was wrong. In reality there is development work being done on a Supercharged SS, but it is not yet approved and at least a few years off. Right now there is a lot of confusion on the issue, but it seems there may be some shared development between this engine and the engine being used for the super Corvette code named “Blue Devil”. The new engine is rumored to be a supercharged V8 with displacement north of 6.0L. This would position the SS much like the SRT-10 and Lightning which use the hottest engines from the Viper and Ford GT respectively. If this engine sees the light of day in the Silverado it will likely produce power numbers to the tune of 500-650 HP. All of this will depend on exactly what components are shared with the “Blue Devil”, if they are identical, 600HP may happen. On the other hand GM could engineer the supercharger from the “Blue Devil” to work on the 6.0L which would keep numbers down. I am guessing we will not see a supercharged SS if approved until sometime after 2007. I am guessing this because GM needs a transmission and drivetrain to deliver all that power to the ground, and many of those components are tied to “Blue Devil” development. If the new Corvette Z06 debuts next year (MY 2006), that means that “Blue Devil” would not happen until at least 2007 and possibly later. A supercharged SS will follow sometime after the “Blue Devil” Corvette because GM would not allow a truck to upstage the hottest Corvette ever made. I have also heard rumors that we may see a supercharged Silverado SS concept at an upcoming autoshow, however details are scarce.
In closing I would like to make a few points. First off, while the 385 HP is pretty much a done deal, the supercharged Silverado is not approved and may not happen. Luckily however, last I heard though, the odds are good it will be approved. Also, please keep in mind that if gas prices or government fuel economy regulations increase, GM might do an about face on parts of it’s future performance truck lineup. In the short term it is not really a threat, but in the future it very well may be.

Thats great news. SSR needs a power bump and this should help a ton. Now this should put the naysayers to rest about the lack of power.
I think alot of people forget that Mustang is Ford's halo car (well there is the GT, but its also over 100,000 dollars) and Corvette (NOT Camaro) is GM's halo car. If Corvette gets outperformed by the Camaro, its image is gonna get watered down quick and I personally would hate seeing that. I love Camaros like no other, but at GM Corvette DESERVES to be the top dawg IMO. Only good news is Corvette seems to be getting better and better being it becoming lighter, a better handler, more power, etc. so its gonna get to the point where Camaro's development team would have to try super hard just to outpace the Vette, even if it shared powertrains with it.
I agree

I have been hoping to see the reg. cab Silverado SS get produced. I really hope its true but would like to see 390 H.P. , because it would best Fords S/C 385 H.P. lightning and the 03 S/C 390H.P. Cobra. With a 6 spd. Silverado SS making 390 N/A this would be one hell of a fire back for all the smack talk their guy has been doing! The supercharger would be a great option to bring it into the SRT-10 teritory. We want to one up them not just match them! If it gets to 390 without the S/C then we will have beat the Lightning H.P. with N/A. , and could snub our noses at 03 Cobras, a S/C should bring more than 385 or 390 H.P., LS1's can make those #'s without it, just look at 02 Z06! However, a S/C is not unfair to go after SRT-10 as it has 2 xtra cyl. I would not be unhappy if it does come out with 385 N/A, but it must be N/A. There are many F-bodies and Vettes runnin' around w/ S/C's putting way more than 390 to the ground, and not just LS1's some are LT1's too. Oh and don't forget the Impalas. I'm not going to be pissed off at the SSR cus Camaro is gone, I think its a killer lookin' roadster that'll be around for awhile especially if the rumors are true, its great news for all the trucks! I am attempting to build my Lightning killer ( I have a long way to go yet), but for those who could afford it, it would be great to go to your local Chevy dealer and buy one brand new!
