Re: Fiero...

You don't like the drivetrain of the Solstice?

The base model is all that's available right now. You do know that the GXP version will have 270hp, right? I don't see a problem with the drivetrain at all.

yes, the 270 I like alot, its the 170 or whatever, but I honestly dont know much about it, so I really shouldnt have said that, I just wish it was closer to 200 for base

It wouldn't have to be closer to 200hp base, if it didn't weigh so much.

Yes, it has a real trunk. In the "real trunk" is the gas tank! Haven't you looked at one of these? You can take a trip with a piece of luggage or a passenger, but not both. I'm pretty sure even a carry-on can't be squeezed into the trunk, between the gas tank and the body. No, I wouldn't even consider using the word "practical" to describe this car.

I agree. This would be a sticking point for me as well.

Video of trunk with top up (scroll down a bit):

Re: Fiero...

Also keep in mind that GM used parts from other non-sport cars on the Fiero to make them cheaper to build. (Didn't they use a Chevette front suspension in back with bigger brakes?)

Could you imagine them using the Aveo suspension on a performance car today?

Yes, they used the Chevette front suspension on the front and the X-car's front suspension on the rear (until 1988). But Kappa has raided the corporate parts bin too (e.g. Sigma rear end, GMT-355 tranny), it's just the parts of better quality now.

Thanks for clarifying. I read that once on a Fiero site and couldn't remember the exact details.

Agreed. I guess the point I was trying to make was... heck I can't remember what point I was trying to make. I guess it was why put inferior parts on a perfomance car, but then I'm the same idiot that wants to see an Aveo SS put into production.

I would like to see a coupe version of the Solstice though. (But not Sky.) Or at least an optional owner installed hardtop. It seems that would fill the Fiero niche.

Why not the Sky? It is the better looking car.

Agreed 100%. If it was a Chevy I'd already own one.

Solstice but not Sky because the base Solstice is considerably cheaper. A coupe version or optional hardtop would make for a great class racer in SCAA. (Actually the hardtop would fit the Sky as well, but I'm guessing a coupe version would be even cheaper to build.)

I thought a removable hardtop was already or soon to be available as a GM accessory.

Have you driven or even looked at one yet? I gotta tell ya, I was really disappointed when I drove it. It's gorgeous, priced right and totally gutless. To further kill the deal, it has less than 2 cubic feet of trunk space, but those cubes are almost useless, since they are arranged in a "U" shape around the gas tank. How can this happen in a new design? I think the Miata has 25-30 cubic feet of trunk.

Sure, when the Redline version comes out, it will be quicker. It would then be gorgeous, quicker, and probably overpriced . . with no useable trunk!Damn, I wish it had been a better thought out design. But it's sold out, and those sales will help GM survive, and thus bolster the 5th Gen Camaro's chances of reaching production.

I think hardtop versions of both cars would be a good idea. It would be nice to see a rwd coupe for around $20k in today's market.

So did I.

Pretty much sums up my feelings too, except for the price since they tack on an extra $5k in Canada above the exchange rate . I know it's not supposed to be a practical car, but heck, if you can't even take a friend with you on a weekend getaway, WTF?

The pretty much sums up all of GM Canada's offerings lately. My G6 was $35k sticker. In the US the same car goes for $4000 cheaper after the exchange rate.

Next time I'm at the dealership, I'll have to take a look at the turn of the Solstice.
