a few questions

what v-8 cars currently have 3-valve heads?
http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...OHV_3valve.pdf
it was rumored that the z06 might get it
this says that they are developing the northstar v-12
http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...pdf/2_step.pdf
i remember hearing that it might go into the escalade, but why develop 2-step valves for it? could they just as easily be developing that for the blue devil?
does anyone know the hp outputs on the x-15 and x-16
http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...rwd_6speed.pdf
if you notice, they show that transmission (its kinda hidden though) supporting a 7.0L (z06?)
that is saying that the 15r can support 402hp and 430ft lb tq. why would they be so specific on the tq? is the new vette under rated?
it says that the 16r is rated at 452 hp and 516 lb ft tq. (z06?)

Re: a few questions

i also just found this which says 450 hp 520 tq
but the v-10 bmw is making 500hp minimal and lutz says his engine makes the same (so i guess that puts the z06 in the 500-550 range?) but what about the tranny info
Justa bit of news from the US.

New “Tiptronic”-type automatic should be available on the ’06 Corvette. Help is on the way for the new Corvette – specifically its carryover 4-speed automatic transmission.

Better automatic on way for new ’Vette.
The car’s current automatic, which lacks “Tiptronic”-like manual-shift capability, is one of the few real disappointments in the otherwise impressive new Corvette. (See related story: C6 Corvette Powers Up)

But not for long. General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman and chief product guru Bob Lutz admits a sequential 6-speeder is on the way, though he declines to specify timing.

“We don’t talk about future product,” says Lutz, who mostly talks only about future product.

GM’s all-new 6-speed automatic will be a derivative of the Hydramatic 5L50-E sequential-shift 5-speed that is standard in the Cadillac XLR roadster. It will be built in four sizes accommodating up to 520 lb.-ft. (705 Nm) of torque and 450 hp. It brings a 7% performance improvement over the new car’s current 4L60/65 automatic, while hiking fuel economy 4%.

The new 6-speed automatic is expected in late 2005, for the ’06 model year. That is about when the Corvette joins the supercar ranks with the launch of a 500-hp, 7L Z06 version of the new model, which is scheduled to debut at the 2005 Detroit auto show. A new LS7 V-8 replaces the old 5.7L 405-hp LS6 as the highest-performance Corvette engine. Top speed jumps from the standard ’Vette’s 186 mph (299 km/h) to more than 200 mph (322 km/h).

“A German competitor (BMW AG) has just launched a complicated V-10,” Lutz says, “Our overhead-valve V-8 has the same power and performance, and only revs to 6,500 rpm.”

GM plans to start building the LS7 in its new Performance Build Center in Wixom, MI, beginning spring 2005. The $10 million facility has the capacity to make 15,000 high-performance engines per year.

Re: a few questions

The V-12 "Northstar" was shown in the Cien concpet back in 99 I belive.
2 step valves?
X-15 and X-16 output?
I do belive that it has been discussed that the Z06 will get some sort of 6spd automatic trans with tiptronic ability. GM has said that they are working on 10 6spds right now for cars across the boards. The Z06 is the first to get it.
The Z06 will probably make 500 as that seems to be the new goal for all super performance cars. It used to be 400 only 3 years ago...pretty crazy? 3 years, the bar was raised 100hp.
Either way, I hope that the LS7 makes its way into more cars like the STS-V, but I know it wont. IMO, a big let down on GM's part for taking a car that is right in the running for great mid-large sized luxury sedan, only to make a performance model years behind the E55 and M5.

All current Mercedes V8's do. They did it to improve emissions, but are switching to dohc 4-valve for better output.

Re: a few questions

now this may seem out of line...but what if the future rwd coupe came with an ls2 with 3 valve heads. i mean, you'd get more power, probably in the 420-450hp range and it would take minor adjustments in the assembly line.

Re: a few questions

true, but there is rumor of a larger V8 displacing 6.2 called the LS3 making mid 400's, still using 2v heads.
3v heads would be nice, as would VVT.
