Few odds and ends.
Re: Few odds and ends.
The dealership we deal with sells Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac, and sold Oldsmobile as well...
Until Saturn, Hummer and Saab became GM products, they did sell all GM products.
I like dealing with them, because it allows me to keep my relationship with one dealership I am happy with, yet allows me to shop virtually the entire GM portfolio at the same time.

As of the first of April, these projects are openly discussed and accepted inside Ford, with the support of Phil Martens and Hau Tai-Tang. It was published in this months Motor Trend too (hence my willingness to sqeal now.
).The late Larry Shinoda's company "Shinoda Performance" has already debutted their "Boss" package on the 2005 - See this link for some good pics - and is reportedly in talks with Ford about cooperation on a Boss 302. Ford will likely provide the drivetrain and Shinoda will provide "the outfit and trim".
Another rumor that is starting to surface more often is the possibility of an "LX" type model again. Personally, I'd love it. No frills and no BS... just a stout V8 and suspension in a semi-stripped base unit... sleeper.
Low cost, low weight, low profile, low key, and low e.t.'s .
So prepare for a veritable onslaught of Mustang derivatives from Ford...
and keep the eye open for the other DC2 derivatives guy mentioned too.
I feel fairly certain that one will come along soon that will appease the hardcore IRS enthsiasts.

Ya ya ya, I'm dreaming a bit, but doesn't hurt to wish.

There's the small matter of the other Chevrolet...
The one with the crossed flags on it.

LX V8. Yummy. The '87-'93 LX 5.0s were about as plain as a car could be, and yet I covet one. A motor. 4 wheels. Windows that roll down, most often by a crank. Gotta love 'em

Give me an '06 LX model with the supposed t-top option for around $24k...I'd buy one in a heartbeat. You gotta figure that would be easy...a $19,995 Mustang Premium V6 gives me everything I want. Add $1,000 for a V8, and $1,000 for the V8, and that's $22k. Add another $1k for necessary beefing for the tranny, rear end and brakes, and for a theoretical $23k the LX 4.6 is born

Never thought I'd be dreaming of a Ford that way, but it sure is feasible. Leave the 17s, fancy trim and whatever to the $2k higher GT...I'd buy an LX
Re: Few odds and ends.
I like the GM delership idea... that would be really nice but then you'd have alot of dealerships close because of how many there are in some towns.
As far as Camaro models go...
You could still do a wide array of em...
Base
LT
RS
Berlinetta
Z28
SS
and whatever happened to being able to cross breed your trim levels???
Maybe I want a Z28 with RS gfx
maybe I want an SS with LT's woodgrain interior trim
Maybe I want a Z28/RS/LT it did happen once before you know...
Options are where its at... Chevrolet needs to have as many options in that Camaro flyer as they can produce. One of the 4th gens biggest mistakes was that a Z28 looked like a base Camaro and nothing differentiated it. the only recognizable difference in models was the SS.
and why not bring back an IROC camaro, or how about an NHRA or Ralley edition? I'd also go heavily on the anniversary editions but this time make them count in the performance department. How about a touring edition? All things they could do very easily.
One last thing... I'd do what Ford does and give some of these cars to the biggest names in the aftermarket before they are realeased. This way when they are tossed out into the market there are bolt ons ready to go.

Re: Few odds and ends.
Price doesn't have much to do with it. The Corvette is an aspirational car and matters little if it is atainable to the general public. Also, yes, the Corvette ZO6 gets the blood boiling much more than a Cobra. The Corvette is still the ultimate American icon and I suspect that it won't change.
All of this of course does not mean that Chevy doesn't need a Camaro.

Like HAZ said, vette is America's favorite sports car and the Mustang Americas favorite pony car.

To the general public, does it get the blood boiling as hot as the much more attainable 2007 Cobra? Not a chance). Mustang is so much easier for the general public to get excited about and identify with....and it's also why Chevrolet still badly needs a stunning new Camaro.
Corvette > Mustang
It's not even close. Do 45 year old men aspire to owning a Mudstain for their mid-life crisis???
NO.
The two cars aren't even in the same league.
One is America's #1 automotive engineering statement. The other was a dolled up Fairmont for 20 odd years.
Price be damned.
People dream about Corvettes. People pledge to be buried with their Corvettes and demand that their headstone has the crossed flags on it. People give up their equity in houses in divorce settlements to keep their Corvettes.
People RENT 6 cylinder Mudstains at AVIS.
I love Camaros. Always have, always will. I own one. But if you think that "I own a Camaro SS/Z28" carries the same prestige and aspirational esteem as "I own a Vette" you're way off base. They were called "the poor man's Corvette" for a reason.
If you honestly think that a large part of the population thinks that a ponycar (ANY ponycar) is in the same league as "America's Sports Car", then you really need to get out more.

Dan,
I think the point that's being made here is like dreaming of marrying Sandra Bullock, but knowing that unless a miracle happens, you'd have to marry the girl next door...... might be just as pretty, but a feller can still dream.
A Camaro is like the pretty girl next door.......someone who'll talk to you and make you happy.
