The Excursion wasn't really that bad, as big SUVs go. The last redesign of the Suburban made the Excursion seem entirely obsolete, but no one could criticise its ruggedness.
The big problem, besides the ride quality, was the fact that neither of the gasoline engine options were entirely satisfactory. I've never liked Ford's long stroke truck engines, and that includes the 5.4 V8 and the 6.8. (Their reluctantness to rev has always been the problem - unlike GM's pushrod V8s. There again, I've made the same comment about the 4-cylinder that Chrysler uses in its minivans.)
In any case, better luck next time FOMOCO!
