Drove a cts-v for a day
Drove a cts-v for a day
The wheel hop would keep me from buying it.I thought my z06 was bad. Nice car otherwise though. Ran 2 g-tech runs, 13.4 13.5...0-60..5.4 ..5.5. First with traction control on 2nd with it off..Then about got busted state cop clocked me at end of second run, he rounded the curve at the end of long straight and came to a stop waiting for me .I stayed on the brakes HARD rolled buy him at about 20 mph, he stares at me with dirty look, I have look of just cr@ping my pants. Just knew he was going to turn around behind me ...and he just drove on. That was the luckyest thing I think has ever happened to me..As he rounded corner i looked down and saw 98 mph ish...I guess he saw dealer plate with magnet stuck on trunk and new car stickers and new i was test driving is all i can think..If it would have been my Z it would have been busted..P.S. I tested my g-tech at the track this year it was within 1 10th of my time..The cts could go faster but practice with avoiding wheel hop is a must.Thought I would share my experience with you guys after reading yours for years here. Thanks for the forum..

Yep , launched at 2500 2nd time little higher than first, car had 10 miles on it when i got it . Had to let off some I was afraid i would break something if i didn't, it was that bad..

Can't wait to see a CTSv vs. STSv article.

Good article. I don't remember the exact times, but the STS-V was about 3-4 tenths and about 1-2 mph quicker in the 1/4 mile.

Why is it that the Corvette, Cobra, & Holden's big cars (including GTO) have IRS but not a rear wheel hop problem, yet Sigma cars (specifically the CTS) has a severe hop problem despite being by all intents and purposes a newer chassis than the others??
Anyone want to take a stab at it?

Re: Drove a cts-v for a day
Didn't hear about the Carrera having that issue as well.
My 89 SC hops under a full power burnout but the LS1 Commodore I drove a few years ago didn't & I haven't heard of it being an issue outside the article you mentioned (Darth or you other GTO owners want to ring in on this?).
Cobras don't have a wheel hop problem, but for some reason or another, Cobra's IRS adsorbs a godawful amount of power. Despite the massive difference in horsepower & torque, the Mustang Mach 1 is amazingly close to the blown Cobra in acceleration.
I don't even think the 300C has a axle hop problem.

In all fairness, I didn't do too many hard launches at first since I didn't want to beat the new car during "break-in", and the weather has made the roads all crummy since.
But, again, the few times I have run it hard, I have noticed no problem. Additionally, I have been enjoying the smoother ride over the pot hole riddled streets vs what my Z28 offered.
Re: Drove a cts-v for a day
eh, although its not as prevalent, you can still get wheel hop in a solid rear axle... And the LS1's 4th gens are nortorious for wheel hop under extreme braking...

They noted it on some street surfaces, but at their test site it basically never happened. I don't know why the CTS-V does it (you are right, you don't hear much about it concerning the Vette). But I've read about it regarding the 911 and GTO (since you mentioned that one specifically), and I'm sure the Cobra has done it at some times (isn't that part of the reason all the drag strip guys want a solid rear axle option on the next Cobra)?

Re: Drove a cts-v for a day
hey i never been able to try this or get an answer on this:
Is the tach on the GTO have the same "lag" as the F-bod's? For example, we all know you hit redline in 1st faster than your tach tells you.. and in neutral when you blip the throttle, you can hear the engine rev first, then the tach lags behind a bit.. Does the GTO do the same thing? CTSv? Vettes?
