Hmm...

4000+ lbs 500HP V10 M5 vs. 3800+ lbs 500HP V8 CTSv.

I think M5 will outhandle the CTSv, but straight line acceleration? Don't know. That V10 is supposed to be nice and high-revving (doesn't redline come at 7 or 8K RPM?)

I don't know if I would count out the CTS-V just yet in handling. If I remember correctly, all the magazines have said the Caddy pretty much equals the M-cars.

I wouldn't count on the M5 out-handling the CTS. The CTS-V could quite possibly be the benchmark 4 door sports sedan from now on. BMW is being given a run for its money.

The lighter 500HP CTSv should out handle the M5 and be quicker. Even though they both will have 500HP the CTSv will have more torque

next M5 = 368tq
next CTSv = ~500tq?

Most GM V8s put out around the same torque as HP

BMW's v10 is only gonna be making 368 ft/lb of tq? Whats the displacement of that thing? Its gotta be small......

When you're talking about 10 cylinders, in my mind it is indeed small. Hell Ford's old v8 is 5 liters. I was just wondering why the small torque number. Maybe its just me but for a 10 cylinder motor, 368 seems kinda low.

Throw your dynos out. There are at least 2 people on the Caddy boards that have run a 13.1 , a 13.2 and a 13.3. Go to ANY HP calculator and type in those times and 4100 (car and driver) and tell me what the HP figure is and they all are in the 400 range. The 13.1 was run with a trap speed of 107 change and he had a best of 109mph and change on a 13.22 run bone stock. There was also a dyno test done with a fan in front for cooling and one w/out and it yeilded something like a 15hp difference. Now imagine a 110mph wind cooling your motor towards the end of your run in the 1/4. Dynos are good for tuning and tracking increses in HP. We all know how du=ifferently dynos read, how weather, hot engine, and elevation can play a serious role in HP numbers. I know my V is faster than my 03 Vette was. I know it is a low 13 second car. Remember, the only REAL dyno is the track.

Also forgot to mention....They are comparing this to the Cobra issue but there is one main difference. the Cobra was running the same times as the GT at the track, The V has backed up its HP claims at the track. If the GTO is 350 HP and close with weight, A 13.4 sounds about right, and a 13.1 sounds about right for 400HP.

number of cylinders has very little effect on peak torque. 5 liters is 5 liters. if you compare that to the "five-oh" you mentioned or the LS1's 5.7 liters, i'd say it compares rather favorably, considering the 5L stang made ~300lb-ft and the LS1 in it's more powerful corvette form "only" made 365lb-ft with an extra .7L

368lb-ft just seems "low" because the BMW puts out 100hp/L for a total of 500hp. like all high output BMW motors, this one likes to SING!
