They build FWD SUV's because they are based on car platforms. Toyota Highlander/Lexus RX300 is a Camry platform. Nissian Murano is based on the Altima/Maxima/I35 platform. Honda CR-V is based on a Civic, Pilot is based on an Accord.

Also, most people simply want the SUV style and AWD, and don't care about towing capacity or going off road. The FWD SUVs drive more like a car which would appeal more to this demographic. They are also smaller and lighter, allowing a smaller engine and better gas mileage.
