disappointment
I was just bored today and checked out chevy's website.I saw the supercharged Cobalt is only suppose to have 205 HP!!!!!!http://www.chevrolet.com/cobalt/#ss_supercharged
I thought the cobalt was going to have more than the Ion Redline's 210's ratings. With the SRT-4 becoming more powerful, why is chevy really falling short?

They try and do the minimum, when everyone else is out there blowing away past trends.
Hopefully that's a woefull understatement, but I'm not keeping my hopes up

ahaha while everyone is blowing them away!! Only car that blows the RL and SS away is the Neon and that thing blows away Mustangs. Now whos the joke on? Everything else. i.e. SVT Focus, Si, RSX-S, etc, is quite behind.
The 2.0 SC motors are quite underrated at 205hp. Sport Compact rag got ~200hp to the wheels on an RL. They arent lagging or doing the bare minimum. Its an all forged, forced induction motor that prior to Saab, has yet to be used in a high performance application. GM rushed to market with this engine, and I am prommised by members of this board that turbo models will follow soon.

Yeah i did a quick net search on the Redline and read that article. Apparently the problem is in the gearing, b/c they were trapping in 3rd gear. Also the rev limiter is too low b/c it cuts off when the power is still building, and when you shift u go below 4k where its hurting again.
Here's a link to the Ion Red Line story:

Sounds like the Cobalt SS will be alittle better than the Ion RL.

and yes the srt4 makes more horsepower but just like the cobra, its in a different category. the srt4 is in the category now of the mustang and the future camaro. not the sport compact market.
GM seems to be doing a real good job lately--a real good job falling short of the performance benchmarks set by others.
The SRT-4 has set the bar for an inexpensive fast four-cylinder. Quick, where should YOUR competitive entry be: (a) higher than the bar, (b) the same as the bar, or (c) lower than the bar?
GM seems to think the right answer is (c).

give the supercharged cobalt sometime to even be RELEASED before passing judgement. maybe well have a rating system like the ls1 fbodies did. they typically dyno MORE to the GROUND than they were rated at, at the FLYWHEEL.
I'm still pretty enthusiastic about the Colbalt Supercharged SS. It has all the right pieces as part of the package, and it's going to be an economy car without an economy car interior. If Chevy delivers what they promised at the LA show, and if the interior of the car on display (which already was pretty top notch in appearence and assembly) was destined to improve before production, it should be a really good little car.
As much as I like the Neon, and think it hands down the best performance bargin (or performance steal!) on the market, it's still a sedan and Colbalt's a coupe.
Also, Colbalt's blown engine might be a bit underrated. At introduction in LA, I was told it had the same supercharged engine as the Ion, but that the actual horsepower figure was tentative because it was in the process of being tuned for even more horsepower.
Since that 210 is what it was initially rated at, there is a good chance that figure is underrated. We'll have to wait till the fall to see how much, but I doubt it will be far off the SRT-4.

Overall, I feel that the Cobalt SS Supercharged is going to be a much better car. True, the SRT-4 is going to be a little faster, but from what we are seeing to this point the Cobalt is going to be a much higher quality car than the Neon. Fellas, it sure has been a long time since we have been able to say " yes this other car may be a little faster than our car but which car is a higher quality car?" This is exactly what Ford told us for years with the Mustang and look where we are today. A car that is just a tad slower but has higher quality will outsell a car that is faster but still a piece of crap.
The Redline seems to be some gearing away from being a nice little mid 14 sec performer.
The Cobalt SS is supposed to be better.
They're worthwhile cars for around $20K considering the competition minus the SRT-4.
Gotta pretty much leave the SRT-4 out of any comparison because they're 275hp $20K tire frying ***** thought up by some freaks at DC. (Then the freaks went nuts and made stage 1 and stage 2 factory backed Mopar mods)
