Did the miata have its own platform?
Ditto.
But Mazda is going to run that chassis forever to recoup the costs just like Dodge's Viper. GM's a little more screamish doing this than everyone else. Look how quickly they killed Fiero.

Not bad for a car that was projected to sell only 50,000 per year. Also makes it even more baffling that they discontinued it because of "poor sales", though it's worse year was 25% under initial projections after almost 4 years with only a very slight design changes.
Interesting. I wonder why GM wont make its own platform Solstice? I seriously think this could sell as well as the Miata, or atleast very close to it. Which is the #1 all time selling sports car. Also GM could use that platform to make other cars... cough*Camaro*cough. I think the cost would be quickly made up, especially with how much praise they have gotten for the Sostice. GM is sitting on a gold mine, they need to get in on it.
I have read on The Car Connection and elsewhere that the next generation miata will be sharing the rx8 platform.
The fiero sold 45k+ units in 1987. In its final year-1988 sales were 26,402 units. This was caused mainly by a 70% decrease in the adv budget (sounds like what happened to f-body recently). The fiero TURNED A PROFIT even at 26k units-but was cancelled anyways.
The competition between the vette guys and pontiac was so intense that I have seen it written that the chevy built 2.8l v6 used in fiero's has a restricted exhaust manifold-to slow the car down.
