"The supercharged SS will be a low volume, kind of a halo car for the Cobalt brand," an industry source says. "It is really aimed at the import tuner crowd."
Why not just call the S/C car the "SS", I don't see the point of having a lower spec SS

R1: Yo man that an SS.
R2: (in reply to his N/A SS) yeah, pushin 20 pounds of boost.
Damn that image gave me shivers. I might have to join the Z/28 clan after all.
1. What a stupid name.
2. Why 2 levels of SS? Also, GM does not understand that the tuner crowd isn't into supercharging. Turbos are where it's at folks!
3. LOSE THE CHROME BARS ALREADY! If I see a 5th Gen Camaro with a chrome bar I will go ballistic....

Offer the legitimate Supercharged SS, then the poser regular SS which in all reality will be the car to appeal to the "tuner" boys and girls who don't want to spend $3000 more, but still want the look.
Anyways, the name seems decent enough (better than misusing Chevelle) and if it looks like the rumored pics of a week or so ago (coupe/hatchback) Chevy may have a car that is successful in drawing new customers beyond mass-rebate buyers. And if they're serious in following Dodge's lead with the SRT-4, the Cobalt SSS could be a car to even win respect from performance enthusiasts.
Interesting...
I talked with one of my sources for Cavalier this weekend and learned a few things... I'll just post here instead of making a new thread since it fits well.
- As far as the name goes, he confirmed that Cavalier was dead... though he told me that Chevrolet Vectra (taken from the Opel Vectra) was being tossed around pretty seriously... but did say that there were a number of new names that could be used.
- The 2005 Delta Car (GMX-001) will have a coupe and a sedan version... however, unlike todays J-car, that the build 6 doors for (the coupe doors, and the sedan doors, they will build only 4 doors... the coupe will supposedly use the sedan's front doors... this elimiated an entire tooling set up with an extra set of doors! Now, I questioned that by saying, "Coudl there be only a sedan then?" and he said he has seen pics and mockups of the coupe version...
- This I found to be interesting... the 2004 J-Car... will actually recieve minor fascia freshening, only a year after the 03 freshening. At least Cavalier will... Some prototypes have been built already and have car covers on them.
- My source also confirms that there will be no Pontiac version of this car... at least not initially. Vibe is intended to be Pontiac's entry level car after Sunfire passes on.
So... I guess this will put my guy to the test... some of that leaves me scratching my head, but he's never been wrong before!

......they're bringing back the LT designation?!?
This could be good news for the Z/28 fanatics around here!
As I suggested long ago.....let the LT again be the "base" V8 model and allow the Z/28 to return to it's place as the Z06 of Camaros!!

Oh yeah... another interesting tidbit:
- the Delta line is being constructed seperately and independant of the J-car line... this has many reasons and advantages... including being able to continue to produce the J-car until the GMX-001 ramps up to full production, BUT:
Apparently, Chevy is leaving some doors open... if the Delta car looks to be a dud after intro... J-Car production may continue past 2004.
There is also a chance that J-Car and Delta car production could run parellel for some time... similar to the Malibu / Malibu Classic idea.

2. Though I favor supercharging myself, you are right about turbos. Seems that's what the tuner crowd is into.
3. Those of us that's been around awhile, associate the eggcrate grill with Chevrolet. That chrome bar originated with 50s trucks. I haven't seen anything yet besides the SSR where that bar looks right.
When I heard the name "Cobalt" I thought of this...

My Cobalt tach. I can see the rice connotations already...

The Cobalt will most likely come is 3 trim levels (plus added options)
1. Base
2. RS (Rally-Sport) - performance look but without supercharger
3. SS - Supercharger all-out perfromance model
