Chevrolet dumps Cavalier name

Automotive News / June 02, 2003
DETROIT -- Chevrolet will abandon the Cavalier name when it redesigns the car for the 2005 model year. The front-wheel-drive car is expected to be called the Cobalt, say dealers who saw the car last month at a Chevrolet event. Cobalt is a metallic element widely used in alloys.
General Motors wants to start fresh with a new name because the company eroded the Cavalier's brand image with high rebates and cheap leases. For example, the 2003 Cavalier carries a $3,000 rebate, which expires today, June 2.
"I can confirm that it will have a new name, but I can't confirm that name," says Tom Wilkinson, Chevrolet's director of communications.
The new car will be developed on GM's fwd Delta architecture. Dealers who saw it last month say the car does not resemble the 2003 Saturn Ion, the first Delta car.
Dealers say the car's front end adopts the division's family look, with a wide, chromelike horizontal bar featuring Chevrolet's bow tie.
The car's market position is expected to be the same as the Cavalier's, although the new vehicle will have more standard equipment. Sources say the 2005 car line will have several models: base, LS, LT, SS, all with naturally aspirated engines. The supercharged SS will produce about 220 hp.
"The supercharged SS will be a low volume, kind of a halo car for the Cobalt brand," an industry source says. "It is really aimed at the import tuner crowd."
Chevrolet has used the Cavalier name since 1981.

The thing that scares me most is the following:
"Dealers say the car's front end adopts the division's family look, with a wide, chromelike horizontal bar featuring Chevrolet's bow tie. "
That damned Chrome horizontal bar returns again and another Chevy Car-AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

If the following is actually true then GM needs to rename all their cars and trucks:
"General Motors wants to start fresh with a new name because the company eroded the Cavalier's brand image with high rebates and cheap leases. For example, the 2003 Cavalier carries a $3,000 rebate, which expires today, June 2."
Gm has offered rebates on all their 2003 cars except for Hummers , some caddies , and Vettes ( the Vette did have 0%-rebates for a short period though)

soooo, when GM decides to redesign the cobalt in,say,2030,you know,GM has to let the corolla and civic go through several generations first,so in 2030,after they've ruined the cobalt's image by letting it rot on the vine, will they change the name again?is this a big three thing now?let's take a name, put it on a decent car, then, wear it the hell out by neglecting the car,get the american public to think its crap,to automatically think..hmmm..grand am(crap)...cavalier(crap)...taurus(crap),then fool the public with new names...hmmm..G6(replaced the grand am..not crap?nah,crap!)....cobalt(huh?what happened to the crappy cavalier?)....futura(hey,those accords are nice!)....colorado(i love my new tacoma!)......crap by any other name.....

HA! That's funny. Do you really think that they'll nurture the Cobalt name until 2030?
ATTENTION ANYONE AT GM!
Please relay this message to anyone in responsible for the "chrome bar".
I cannot express in words my hatred for the "chrome" bar. It is the ugliest, and worst attempt at creating a brand image EVER. Are you trying to drum up some bad press with the thought that any press is good press? Did you get a good deal on millions of these chrome bars from a Kmart liquidation sale or something? Maybe it's some sort of sick joke/punishment from the UAW? My mind simply cannot comprehend the logic GM designers are using.
GM's worst enemy is GM, everyday there is something new to cry about.
